About the Role

Apply sub-coatings and finish coatings to all metal components and finished product. Fulfill all painting requirements, including parts painting to completed vehicle paint in both solid and metallic colors. Mix all products according to specifications, check painted materials for proper surface condition, and perform necessary paint preparation and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions in English.
  • Perform tasks with close attention to detail and minimal supervision.
  • Set work priorities to meet production goals as scheduled.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
  • Meet safety and housekeeping standards per assigned department.
  • Comply with all rules of conduct and attendance per the company handbook.
  • Mix coatings with thinner and catalyst to correct mixture using color mixture equipment.
  • Apply coatings with all types of spray equipment to meet coverage and gloss standards.
  • Correct errors in application of coatings and ensure acceptable quality of finish.
  • Follow procedures for a quality, lasting paint surface.
  • Maintain spray equipment to meet operational standards (excluding repairs).
  • Follow hazardous waste disposal program and fire prevention procedures.
  • Assist master painter with cleanup, staging parts, and delivering parts to different departments.
  • Ensure hazardous waste is placed into the proper container(s) and maintain closed containers unless adding or removing waste.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan and spill response procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate simple instructions, correspondence, and memos in English.
  • Ability to read English and Metric tape measures and use measuring devices.
  • Ability to perform operations within acceptable quality and time standards.
  • Ability to recognize and reproduce expected quality standards.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Must maintain a positive rating as described in the training/qualification evaluation record as a Painter.
  • Ability to operate spray equipment in confined spaces and hand control crane.
  • Full knowledge of quality requirements to produce acceptable finish paint.
  • Ability to retain information about chemicals and their proper usage.
  • General knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.
  • Trained in Hazardous Materials Handling Operations with an annual refresher course.
  • Hazardous waste training provided within six months of hire, with annual reviews thereafter.
  • Knowledge of organizational relationships and how to influence internal and external groups.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate situations, providing recommendations for action.
  • Ability to interact with various levels of personnel and functional areas.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including critical analysis.
  • GED or HS Diploma (GED may be obtained within the first year of employment with acceptable prior experience).
  • Six months of automotive-quality paint experience preferred or prior acceptable training.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, use hands to handle tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to walk.
  • Occasionally required to sit, talk, hear, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to work from squatting, kneeling, or bending positions.
  • Ability to work with arms above head.
  • Hand-eye coordination required.
  • Ability to work from ladders or scaffolding.
  • Ability to safely use hand, air, power tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to operate and understand protective safety equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must differentiate between color shades.
  • Ability to handle and dispose of hazardous waste.
  • No allergic reactions to fiberglass, body filler, paint dust, or other paint-related chemicals.
  • Must be able to breathe through a paint respirator for more than ten hours per day.
  • Ability to work in temperatures above 100 degrees for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in noisy and dusty conditions.

Work Environment

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Loud noise levels and dusty air quality.
