Responsibilities
- Supervise blasters and responsible for all blasting operations.
- Supervise painters and is responsible for coating application over prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers or finish coatings.
- Select the correct application systems for coatings being applied.
- Responsible for proper cleaning, and reassembling sprayers and power equipment, using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties.
- Monitor painting operations in order to identify flaws such as blisters, runs/sags and streaks so that their causes can be corrected.
- Dispose of hazardous waste in an appropriate manner.
- Oversees painter prep personnel for proper preparation prior to applying coatings.
- Supervises finishers and is responsible for the removal and reassembly of gates, valves, hatches, etc.
- Select paint according to company requirements and match colors of paint following specified color charts.
- Adjust controls on infrared ovens, heat lamps, portable ventilators, and exhaust units in order to speed the drying of coatings between coats.
- Select and use proper testing techniques to meet the quality standards of AAR and NACE.
- Verify paint consistency, using a viscosity meter.
- Administer Surface Contamination Tests if required.
- Use of proper testing techniques to meet the quality standards of AAR and NACE.
- Knowledge to reference AAR Field Manual, C III MSRP Appendix L, SSPC, NACE, CFR 49 standards.
- Trained to perform intermediate and final bake procedures on all railcar and/or equipment.
- Atmospheric testing and holiday testing procedures when required.
