Paid College Internship - Capital Programs, Cuyahoga County, Garfield Hts. - Construction, Planning & Design

About the role

This is a temporary position involving various duties that will either supplement the student’s major field of study and/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student’s education and meaningful preparation for future professional employment. The student will serve as an understudy or assistant on small projects, receive training on procedures, and perform specific technical tasks as assigned.

Planning and Design (District 12 Planning Department)

• Travel to collection sites to assist office staff with data collection
• Conduct literature research, collect, process, and analyze data, and prepare preliminary reports for research or evaluating projects in the District 12 Planning Department
• Assist in the development of Transportation Asset Inventories and/or condition assessments and other Transportation Asset Management (TAM) activities
• Utilize Geo-Spatial analysis to assist in map generation and spatial analysis (e.g., using GeoMedia and/or ESRI ArcView) to support TAM

Construction Department Duties

• Receive training in proper procedures for inspection of work being done by contractors (e.g., widening and resurfacing projects, hazard elimination (safety upgrading), signing, guardrail, intersections, drainage facilities, forms and reinforcing steel; concrete placement on structures, flexible and rigid pavement; assist in bituminous plants)
• Perform tests on concrete and soil
• Assist in surveying

Support and Technical Tasks

• Perform support functions in record keeping, maintain accurate data of work performed, organize materials, and compile information to assist in report preparation
• Operate a PC and CADD (MicroStation) system and perform duties on them independently; call up, work with, and insert files; copy, update, and revise existing drawings on the CADD database; create new drawings into the CADD database using sketches and/or ports of preexisting drawings, some of which may be on CADD already
• Perform calculations
• Assist with engineering studies and preliminary engineering
• Use CADD applications within the District Office assisting in the development of highway reconstruction plans:
  • Plan and profile sheets of existing and proposed roadway improvements
  • Highway and bridge related detail drawings
  • Tables, summaries, and general notes
  • Mapping existing and proposed routes
  • Finalization of plan sheets in reproducible form (plotting)
• Perform miscellaneous duties to facilitate operational efficiency of work unit (e.g., research of plans and records, scan and reproduce plans)

Requirements

• Must currently be enrolled in a college or university and in good academic standing
• Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering preferred

Compensation

$19.50 – $24.00 per hour

Schedule

Part-time, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm
