Plastic Express operates from 22 full-service facilities, more than 40 bulk terminals, and 52 railcar terminals offering more than 8,500 railcar spots across the country. We are located near 9 major ports in the U.S. and rely heavily on our rail infrastructure to handle imports/exports as well as regional distribution. At many of the Plastic Express sites, we also handle some non-plastic commodities, including paper rolls, steel, building materials, and other dry bulk materials.

About the role

With reporting responsibilities to the Packaging Manager, this position is directly responsible for performing essential warehouse packaging functions in a safety-sensitive and production environment. This includes packaging operations, maintaining inventories, performing light maintenance, training new staff when requested, record keeping, and communication of issues with management.

Responsibilities

  • Unload goods and material received, enter appropriate information into the system, label, and locate material.
  • Separate customer orders, pull and stage orders, and repack material if required to meet customer specifications.
  • Make boxes, pack, label, and locate materials as required.
  • Ensure all products are properly labeled.
  • Perform functions/transactions in the designated system to receive or ship material.
  • Participate in cycle counting, enter and verify information, and research and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Review preventative maintenance check sheets for forklifts and ensure good working order of machines.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and ensure inspection paperwork is completed correctly and turned in daily (e.g., forklift, transfer system, and compressor inspections).
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations; maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings and monthly safety meetings.
  • Participate in operations training and development programs.
  • Demonstrate a positive and healthy attitude at all times while performing job functions.
  • Handle the accumulation, disposal, and transportation of hazardous waste if required, including participation in prerequisite RCRA waste management training.
  • Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, reach trucks, railmovers, or other heavy-duty material movers when properly certified; never operate equipment without documented certification.
  • Review all receipts and shipments with actual incoming or outgoing material; ensure all documentation matches the product being shipped or received.
  • Perform relocation of goods and track/record the relocations as necessary.
  • Maintain meticulous records of shipping/receiving documentation.
  • Monitor and conduct the day-to-day operation of the packaging operations.
  • Help maintain all inventories related to the packaging and warehouse operation through communication with management.
  • Report any related operational problems to the Packaging Manager.
  • Ensure all related production documentation is correct and turned in in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all safety and production procedures are being followed.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and keep excellent housekeeping practices in all work areas.
  • Perform routine and/or required light maintenance on all related packaging equipment.
  • Supervise any outside maintenance work and contractors when requested by management.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are being followed during any machine outage and/or maintenance.
  • Maintain highly detailed maintenance inspection records and logs.
  • Communicate all related equipment issues with the Packaging Manager.
  • Support all facets of Operation Clean Sweep, making a conscious effort to prevent pellet, flake, and powder loss into the environment and ensure any spills are swiftly and effectively cleaned up.

Requirements

  • Minimum education: high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to safely operate a forklift and pass site forklift certification.
  • Previous warehousing experience is preferred.

  • Ability to recognize onsite risk factors and take appropriate action with firmness and tact.
  • Ability to think independently and make decisions that are in the company’s best interest.
  • Must be multi-task oriented with the ability to handle many activities simultaneously.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to perform physical labor such as lifting up to 55 lbs., moving up to 250 pounds, climbing ladders, operating control panels, and working with hand tools.
  • Adequate vision to include close visual confirmation of finely printed documents, distance vision to safely and correctly identify objects and/or markings, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus on subjects or objects at any safe working distance.
  • Must be able to work overtime, long hours, weekends, and holidays when needed.

Work Environment

Expected to operate in a warehouse setting, with some outdoor exposure during the workday. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines, as well as standard warehouse equipment such as hand trucks, box cutters, and tape dispensers.
