About the role

As a Sample Preparation Supervisor at ALS, you will oversee all sample preparation activities and client services functions. Your priority will be organizing the production schedule and collaborating with the work order entry group and Sample Preparation staff to ensure client instructions are followed accurately.

Responsibilities

• Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
• Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.
• Manage the sample preparation process as samples arrive in the lab.
• Maintain shift production levels and ensure sample preparation work meets required turnaround time.
• Determine when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete, or ambiguous, and liaise with layout personnel and the work order entry group to resolve issues.
• Contact clients to confirm instructions and ensure complete information is relayed to prep write-up personnel.
• Maintain close liaison with the Branch Manager and other lab staff to ensure smooth service delivery to clients.
• Identify and resolve internal and external problems as they arise.
• Investigate client inquiries and complaints related to quality issues and suggest proactive actions.
• Train sample preparation staff and monitor their performance.
• Organize employee scheduling and shift work in consultation with the Branch Manager.
• Screen and interview potential new employees in consultation with the Branch Manager.
• Manage employee performance evaluations, discipline, and other issues in consultation with the Branch Manager.
• Act as backup for the Branch Manager during vacation and other absences.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of work experience in a commercial minerals laboratory or minerals sample preparation.
• 2+ years of experience in a supervisory role, managing and training staff.
• Degree or diploma in mineralogy, geology, or chemistry is an asset.
• Forklift license/certification or experience driving a forklift is an asset.

Skills

• Experience in managing and training staff.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory computer systems.
• Basic mechanical aptitude.
• Highly organized and motivated with a strong commitment to quality and safety.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to handle a high volume of work and time-critical issues effectively.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact.
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficient in LIMS, Webview, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
