P4 Sample Preparation Lead Hand

About the role

As a Sample Preparation Technician (P4), you will supervise the Sample Preparation floor during your shift. Your priority is to ensure the department runs smoothly, all standards are followed, and client instructions are executed correctly. You will also be involved in the training and development of Sample Preparation technicians.

Responsibilities

• Helps manage the sample preparation workflow as samples arrive in the lab.
• Maintains shift production levels and ensures sample preparation meets required turnaround time.
• Determines when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete, or ambiguous through close liaison with layout personnel and the work order entry group.
• Maintains close liaison with Supervisors and other lab staff to ensure smooth service delivery to clients.
• Identifies and resolves internal and external problems as they arise.
• Responsible for training sample preparation staff and monitoring their performance.
• Organizes employee scheduling and shift work in consultation with the Supervisor.
• Assists with employee performance evaluations, discipline, and other issues in consultation with the Supervisor.
• Acts as backup for Supervisors during vacations and other absences.
• Uses correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.
• Observes established safety regulations and complies with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of work experience in a commercial minerals laboratory or minerals sample preparation.
• Forklift license/certification or experience driving a forklift is an asset.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to work in a hot and dusty environment.
• Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (occasionally lifting may exceed 50 lbs, and assistance is mandatory from either another employee or lift assist equipment).
• Must be cleanly-shaven to wear protective equipment.
• Ability to perform general office work, including periodic sedentary responsibilities.

Skills

• Experience in managing and training staff is an asset.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory computer systems.
• Basic mechanical aptitude.
• Organized and highly motivated individual.
• Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality and safety.
• Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.
• Ability to handle a high volume of work and time-critical issues effectively.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact.
• Intermediate English communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Intermediate computer skills, including LIMS, Webview, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
