Sample Prep Lead

About the role

The Sample Preparation Technician (P4) supervises the Sample Preparation floor and ensures all standards are followed by the staff on shift. This position involves training and developing Sample Preparation technicians, resolving internal and external problems, and assisting with employee performance evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Helps manage the sample preparation workflow and ensures shift production levels meet required turnaround times.
• Determines when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete, or ambiguous and works closely with layout personnel and work order entry group to resolve these issues.
• Maintains close liaison with supervisors and other lab staff to ensure smooth service delivery to clients.
• Identifies and resolves internal and external problems as they arise.
• Trains and monitors the performance of sample preparation staff.
• Organizes employee scheduling and shift work in consultation with the supervisor.
• Assists the supervisors during their vacations and other absences.
• Ensures the use of correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules, maintaining analytical quality.
• Observes and complies with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Experience in managing and training staff is an asset.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory computer systems is required.
• Basic mechanical aptitude is necessary.
• An organized and highly motivated individual is preferred.
• A detail-oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality and safety is essential.
• The ability to work independently and/or as part of a team is required.
• The ability to handle a high volume of work and time-critical issues is necessary.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact are required.
• Intermediate English communication skills, both written and verbal, are needed.
• Intermediate computer skills, including LIMS, Webview, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years work experience in a commercial minerals laboratory or minerals sample preparation is required.
• A forklift license/certification, or experience driving a forklift, is an asset.

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to work in a hot and dusty environment.
• Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs (occasionally lifting may exceed 50lbs and assistance is mandatory).
• To be cleanly-shaven for protective equipment.
• Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, including periodic sedentary responsibilities.
