About the role
Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) is seeking experienced Overhead Crews including Foreman, Lineman, Operator, and Groundman positions. Preference may be given to candidates who can bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Apprentices and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on all electrical distribution and associated equipment projects.
- Communicate, demonstrate and enforce safety requirements and best practices.
- Manage supplies, materials and equipment.
- Assist with planning, directing and budget activities concerned with the construction of a pole line and other electrical material and equipment used for distribution line construction projects.
- Read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, and scopes of work.
- Communicate directly with General Foremen, Superintendents, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Line Crews and other project personnel as required.
- Understand and follow detailed construction schedules.
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
- Perform rigorous physical labor as required, including climbing, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead lines.
- Perform various manual tasks in the construction & maintenance of overhead power lines.
Requirements
- Able/willing to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
- Able/willing to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
- Able/willing to work Overtime, when required.
- Total commitment to safety and compliance.
- Able to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints and scopes of work.
- Able to coordinate & collaborate effectively with multiple levels within company.
- Able to work alone on de-energized lines.
- Able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
- Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Able to properly sag wire.
- Able to lead crew in assembly and erection of structures to all heights, in absence of Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
- Able to work at heights up to and above 60 feet preferred.
- Able to communicate effectively, demonstrate & encourage teamwork skills and able to understand, comprehend, and follow directions in the workplace.
- Able to have a quality work ethic and be committed to optimal Customer Service.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- Valid Class A CDL is highly preferred.
- Active enrollment in SUI apprenticeship program (high school diploma or equivalent is required for program enrollment).
Skills
- Proficiency in all aspects of energized line work.
- Ability to operate bucket truck, digger derrick, backhoe, and other equipment.
- Knowledge of pole/tower climbing.
- Ability to work at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Ability to properly install and remove Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and cover-ups.
- Ability to identify and locate puller and tensioner setups.
- Ability to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Ability to perform Job Task Safety Analysis meetings or tailgate briefings.
- Ability to safely install and remove mechanical jumpers.
- Ability to properly inspect rubber goods, covers, and PPE.
- Ability to tie various lineman knots.
- Ability to make up and use a hand line.
- Understanding of grounding procedures.
- Understanding of principles of proper equipment set-up.
- Understanding of different types of materials used in line work.
- Understanding of minimum approach distance.
- Understanding of flag and tag procedures.
