About the role

Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks experienced Overhead Crews including Foreman, Lineman, Operator, and Groundman positions. Preference may be given to candidates who can bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews. Safety is a core value, and substantial weight will be given to candidates demonstrating their commitment to safe operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Apprentices and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on all electrical distribution and associated equipment projects.
  • Coordinate essential personnel on-site for the project to include crew mobilization.
  • Communicate, demonstrate and enforce safety requirements and best practices.
  • Manage supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Assist with planning, directing and budget activities concerned with the construction of a pole line and other electrical material and equipment used for distribution line construction projects.
  • Read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, and scopes of work.
  • Communicate directly with General Foremen, Superintendents, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Line Crews and other project personnel as required.
  • Understand and follow detailed construction schedules.
  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor as required, including climbing, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
  • Perform various manual tasks in the construction & maintenance of overhead power lines.
  • Comprehend, interpret and follow direction from Crew Foreman and senior crew members.
  • Comprehend and apply training in Safety, First Aid and job/task specific topics.
  • Demonstrate a professional appearance & attitude in dealings with co-workers, customers, subcontractors and the general public.
  • Assemble materials on the ground and hoist them into the work area using handlines and other safe methods.
  • Flag traffic and set up job sites as directed.
  • Maintain organization of tools and materials on work vehicles.
  • Perform set up, clean up and organizing of job sites.

Requirements

  • Able/willing to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Able/willing to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able/willing to work Overtime, when required.
  • Total commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor as required, including climbing, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
  • Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Proficient in all aspects of energized line work.
  • Interact in a positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
  • Properly sag wire.
  • Lead crew in assembly and erection of structures to all heights, in absence of Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and execute dead ending and sagging operations for all conductors.
  • Execute hot line work on conductor systems.
  • Operate Bucket Truck, Digger Derrick, Backhoe, etc.
  • Climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
  • Phase out a line using phasing sticks.
  • Identify and locate puller and tensioner setups.
  • Plan safe work based on a job print or work order.
  • Obtain a "one shot" on a recloser.
  • Understand and follow flag and tag procedures.
  • Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Install and remove PPE and cover up.
  • Understand and apply grounding procedures.
  • Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
  • Identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Understand minimum approach distance.
  • Understand principles of proper equipment set-up.
  • Identify and locate different types of materials used in line work.

  • Assist with assembly and erect poles to all heights.
  • Assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
  • Assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
  • Absorb knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
  • Assist with installing all types of compression connections.
  • Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
  • Properly inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
