Orthopedic Technologist

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the orthopedic casting, bracing, and splinting of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician.
• Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders.
• Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces.
• Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting; assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate clinical staff members.
• Removes sutures and staples.
• Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
• Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures.
• Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes.
• Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
• Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary.
• Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum of 1 year cast room / medical office experience a plus but not required
• Orthopedic Technician and/or ATC Certification preferred but not required
• Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures, and other regulatory policies
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment
• Understanding of medical office procedures, policies, practices, medical terminology, telephone protocol, and professional etiquette
• Experience with electronic medical systems, including Athena/Centricity, Medi-Tech, PM, and office management systems and procedures
• Outstanding knowledge of MS Office
• Working knowledge of office equipment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Organized with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
• Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
• Develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public by displaying sympathy, tact, and understanding
• Promotes teamwork through collaboration
• Represents the clinic in a professional manner
• Able to maintain strict confidentiality on all patient issues
