New England Donor Services (NEDS) coordinates organ and tissue donation in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, the eastern counties of Vermont, and Bermuda. Responsible for one of the largest of the 55 Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) nationwide, NEDS works with over 200 hospitals and serves nearly 15 million people, screening nearly 55,000 potential donor referrals annually.

About the role

New England Donor Services is seeking an experienced ICU RN, Critical Care RN, Trauma Nurse, or Critical Care Respiratory Therapist to join our team as a Donation Coordinator. In this role, you will respond on-site to organ donor referrals to provide clinical expertise in donor evaluation, donor management, organ allocation, and organ recovery. You will blend high-level clinical and people skills to educate hospital staff on the donation process, work with donor families to obtain consent for donation, and collaborate with multiple surgical teams and critical care staff to optimize organs for transplantation.

Success in this role requires a self-assured professional with keen clinical assessment skills, the ability to remain flexible, and the capacity to stay calm and effective in highly charged and clinically complex situations.

Schedule

Orientation: After a general company-wide week-long onsite orientation in Waltham, MA, you will participate in a specialized organ donation training program. The New Hire Donation Academy runs 3 days/week for the first 3 weeks in the Waltham office (generally Tuesday through Thursday on a day shift), with additional training throughout the orientation program.

Once classroom training is completed, new hires will transition to a mix of 16-hour day and 12-hour night on-call shifts. The schedule averages 14 shifts per 4-week period, plus trainings and meetings. Significant travel throughout New England using a personal vehicle is expected, with mileage and other reimbursements available.

Independent Role: 12-hour night shifts, 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM (3 shifts per week on a 4-week schedule, up to 40 hours per week), plus trainings and meetings. Significant travel with a personal vehicle throughout New England is required, with mileage and other reimbursements available.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical expertise in donor evaluation, donor management, organ allocation, and organ recovery.
• Educate hospital staff on the donation process.
• Work with donor families to obtain consent for donation.
• Collaborate with surgical teams and critical care staff to optimize organs for transplantation.
• Travel to Waltham headquarters and various hospitals throughout New England.

Requirements

• Critical care or trauma experience with medical/clinical credentials, including experience managing complicated clinical events.
• Valid driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation (extensive driving throughout New England is required).
• Must maintain the requirements of an “eligible driver,” including being at least 21 years old, maintaining an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and required minimum personal automobile insurance per NEDS policy.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of clinical/critical care experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• CPTC Certification a plus.
