New England Donor Services (NEDS) coordinates organ and tissue donation in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, the eastern counties of Vermont and Bermuda. Responsible for one of the largest of the 55 Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) that make up the nation’s donation system, NEDS works with over 200 hospitals and serves nearly 15 million people in our region, screening nearly 55,000 potential donor referrals annually.

About the role

New England Donor Services is seeking an experienced ICU RN, Critical Care RN, Trauma Nurse, or Critical Care Respiratory Therapist to join our team as a Donation Coordinator. You will respond on-site to organ donor referrals to provide clinical expertise in donor evaluation, donor management, organ allocation, and organ recovery. Ideal candidates live within an hour of Boston and Boston North, MA.

You will blend high-level clinical and people skills to educate hospital staff on the donation process, work with donor families to obtain consent for donation, and collaborate with multiple surgical teams and critical care staff to optimize organs for transplantation. Success in this role requires a self-assured professional with keen clinical assessment skills, the ability to be flexible, and the capacity to remain calm and effective in highly charged and clinically complex situations.

Schedule

Orientation: After a general company-wide week-long onsite orientation in Waltham, MA, you will participate in a specialized organ donation training program. The New Hire Donation Academy is 3 days/week for the first 3 weeks in the Waltham office (generally Tuesday through Thursday on a day shift), with additional training in the Waltham office throughout the orientation program. Once classroom training is completed, new hires will participate in a mix of 16-hour day and 12-hour night on-call shifts. Average 14 shifts per 4-week schedule, plus trainings and meetings.

Independent: 12-hour night shifts, 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM (3 shifts per week on a 4-week schedule, up to 40 hours per week), plus trainings and meetings. Significant travel with a personal vehicle throughout all of New England is expected. Mileage and other reimbursements are available.

Requirements

• Critical care or trauma experience with medical/clinical credentials, including experience managing complicated clinical events.
• Valid driver’s license and insurance; extensive driving throughout New England is required, and reliable transportation is mandatory.
• Critical thinking skills and keen clinical assessment abilities.
• Compassion and conflict resolution skills.
• Able to sit, stand, or bend for extended periods of time.
• Strong work ethic and forward-thinking mindset.
• Must be at least 21 years old, maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and meet the required minimum personal automobile insurance per NEDS policy.
• Must be vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of clinical experience, with critical care experience preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• CPTC Certification is a plus.
• Ideal candidates live within an hour of Boston and Boston North, MA.
