Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) Pro Tem Multi-Hazards Field Technician - Open Pool

Position Summary

Pro Tem Multi-Hazards Field Technicians play a key role in advancing our mission to improve real time scientific understanding of earthquakes, wildfires, and related natural hazards. Based in Eugene, field tech positions support regional research initiatives by traveling throughout Oregon and neighboring states to operate, evaluate, and refine a distributed monitoring network that generates critical scientific data for public safety and community resilience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and monitor instrument performance
• Conduct field investigations
• Identify and troubleshoot data irregularities
• Implement improvements to data collection infrastructure
• Document findings for ongoing scientific analysis

Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather
• Ability to carry equipment up to 50 pounds for short distances over uneven terrain
• Valid US driver’s license
• First Aid and CPR certification within the first month
• Vertical Access Program (VAP) qualification for above-ground climbing and rope access work

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in STEM field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
• Technical knowledge in digital data collection systems (subsystems of low-voltage power, digital sensors, and telecommunications)
• Remote field installation and operations workflows

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with remote sensing, seismic, or related data acquisition systems
• Experience deploying scientific equipment in remote field settings
• Experience with low-voltage (12/24/48VDC) power systems
• Experience with radio telemetry systems in licensed and unlicensed spectrum
• Experience working in industrial communications/telecommunications environments
• Experience configuring and supporting IP network devices
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals (OSI model, TCP/IP, subnets)
• Experience using documentation, asset management, or tracking platforms (e.g., Jira, NetBox, SIS, databases)
• Experience operating 4x4 vehicles in off-road environments
