About the role

The position is responsible for performing the functions of an Operating Room Technician in collaboration with the Operating Room Registered Nurse. The OR Tech is responsible for adhering to AORN Standards of Practice, managing supplies and equipment with the direction of Operating Room Registered Nurse, and for promoting team work with physicians and personnel of other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile/aseptic technique and recognizes and corrects any breaks in this technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of location, care and use of all equipment/supplies pertaining to Operating Room.
  • Maintains sterile field at all times.
  • Performs room turnovers.
  • Assists with instrument turnover and washing instruments as time permits.
  • Changes bed linens on patient stretchers as necessary while patient is in OR.
  • Affixes weekly and monthly housekeeping functions including defrosting the refrigerator on a regular basis.
  • Affixes perioperative staff with patient transfers and restless patients.
  • Plans for tasks and equipment associated with case.
  • Requests clarification on assignments as needed.
  • Follows through and completes job assignments within agreed upon time frame.
  • Reports any equipment that is not in working order to assigned RN.
  • Delivers specimens and tests to appropriate areas.
  • Affixes picking cases, putting away supplies, and other Sterile Core Tech functions.
  • Identifies problems and/or need for improvement and communicates this information to the Perioperative Services Director.
  • Participates in developing, reviewing, and revising policies and procedures.
  • Affixes orientation of new employees as directed.
  • Covers for absentee replacement on short notice.
  • Initiates CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies.
  • Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of a basic Operating Room Technician Program or one year of general surgical experience preferred.
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST) preferred.
  • Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire.
  • One year of general surgical experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent and at times prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Heavy physical effort, ability to lift/carry up to 25 lbs. (supplies and equipment).
  • Good reading eyesight.
  • Able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally.
  • Full visual acuity, color perception.
  • Able to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
