About the role
The Optometric Technician ensures all patients receive the highest quality optometric care while delivering an unsurpassed patient experience. This role links the doctor and primary care functions, supporting seamless patient flow throughout the exam.
Responsibilities
- Assists with patient care and eye exams, including managing patient records and supporting patient flow.
- Performs tests to aid the optometrist with vision examinations, such as visual acuity measurements, depth and color perception tests, and retinal imaging.
- Ensures accurate diagnosis and treatment by performing tests within an appropriate time frame.
- Reviews prescriptions and patient information carefully, identifying special needs and consulting with optometrists or managers when necessary.
- Resolves situations involving dissatisfied patients quickly and effectively.
- Performs work accurately despite time pressure and patient volume.
- Handles and files patient records in an organized, efficient manner in accordance with practice standards and HIPAA.
- Supports contact lens exams and orders, including contact lens care, trial inventory, and patient orders.
- Utilizes appointment book/scheduling procedures and computer operations effectively.
- Operates the point-of-sale system, inputting patient information accurately and processing sales transactions.
- Maintains a safe working environment for team members and patients.
- Supports compliance with visual merchandising standards in exam lanes, assessment rooms, and contact lens areas.
- Adapts to various examination scenarios and maintains a personable demeanor with patients and staff.
- Performs pre-examination testing accurately, explains measurements, and answers patient questions.
- Responsible for maintenance, disinfection of equipment, and providing clinical support to the optometrist.
- Works weekends and evenings as needed to support business requirements.
- Adheres to attendance, timekeeping, and dress code policies.
- Performs other functions as assigned by the Practice Manager or business needs.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 2+ years’ experience in optometry, ophthalmology, or a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of optical and medical terminology.
- Understanding and utilization of optical equipment and diagnostic testing (e.g., pre-exam testing, visual acuity).
- Strong coaching, communication, and listening skills.
- Problem-solving and organizational abilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to assess priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Knowledge of office environments and strong basic math skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare, customer service, retail, and/or optical settings.
- Optometric technician certification.
Pay
Pay for this role starts at $28.16 per hour. Employee pay is determined by factors including geography, experience, qualifications, skills, and local minimum wage requirements. You may also be offered a competitive bonus and/or commission plan.
