About the Role

As an Optician, you will provide expert eyewear solutions and exceptional patient care. You will assist patients in selecting eyewear and accessories that fit their prescription, lifestyle, and personal style while ensuring proper frame fit, accurate measurements, and correct lens dispensing. Your role combines technical expertise with outstanding customer service to drive patient trust, loyalty, and repeat business.

Responsibilities

• Deliver an extraordinary experience to each patient, ensuring a complete understanding of customized recommendations for products and services.
• Receive patient handoff from technicians or doctors, establish rapport, and ask lifestyle questions to identify visual needs and recommend appropriate frames, lenses, lens treatments, and specialty products.
• Stay current on company/industry products, procedures, manufacturer rebates, and available lens and frame types.
• Handle patient calls, update them on order status, and resolve any order issues; escalate to management as needed.
• Assist patients in selecting frames, lens types, and lens treatments (e.g., tints and coatings) based on specific needs and facial measurements.
• Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care, maintenance, warranty coverage, protection plans, and replacement options.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of medical and vision insurance plans, including eligibility, benefits, copays, deductibles, authorizations, and coverage limitations.
• Accurately interpret prescriptions written by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists and enter all prescription information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and ALE system.
• Ensure all required documentation is scanned and attached to the patient’s chart.
• Follow up on pending orders, verify timelines, inform patients of delays, and notify them when eyewear is ready.
• Dispense glasses by inspecting the product, checking for proper fit, adjusting if necessary, and soliciting patient feedback.
• Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit, and patient comfort using tools such as pupilometers, PD sticks, lensometers, pliers, wrenches, and frame warmers.
• Regularly communicate with technicians and managers regarding patient information or order status.
• Inspect the final product for flaws, clean and polish lenses, and maintain the cleanliness and visual appeal of frame boards, displays, mirrors, and work areas.
• Address product issues, analyze problems, and answer patient questions regarding insurance, warranties, products, pricing, upgrades, promotions, and services.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED qualification.
• ABO/NCLE certification preferred but not required.
• Minimum of one year of experience working as an Optician strongly preferred.
• Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred.
• Proficiency in PC skills, including Microsoft Office, Windows, and word processing.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor; sales experience preferred.
• Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
