Opthalmic Clinic Lead

The Eye Center of St. Augustine is the oldest and largest state-of-the-art eye care center in the area, offering comprehensive services including an eye center, surgery center, and optical shop under one roof. With satellite locations in World Golf Village, Palm Coast, and Palatka, our board-certified doctors provide premier care to patients across Northeast Florida. Our ophthalmic surgeons perform cataract, laser, and ophthalmic plastic surgery on-site, and we offer eye examinations for adults and children over seven, along with a full-service optical shop at each location.

About the role

The Clinic Lead oversees all day-to-day activities at a specified practice location, including staffing, clinic flow, patient relations, inventory, and equipment maintenance. This role requires leadership, strong problem-solving skills, and knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards by iJCAHPO and other regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

Clinical

• Aids with patient flow, diagnostic testing, and technician exam components as needed.
• Supports timely completion of clinical administrative duties, including Rx refills, patient messages/tasks, and documentation audits.
• Maintains communication with the clinical training team regarding technicians in training.
• Complies with all practice procedures, protocols, and State/Federal regulations.
• Determines if documentation supports E/M vs. Eye Code, matches applicable ICD-10 codes, and appropriately codes in-office procedures.
• Educates patients regarding conditions treated and surgical procedures performed by the doctor.
• Performs advanced clinical skills based on iJCAHPO training, including:
  • History Taking
  • Visual Acuity
  • Confrontation Visual Fields
  • Extraocular Motility Assessment (evaluation of ductions, cover/uncover & alternating cover testing, documentation of defects, and recognition of related pathology)
  • Pupil Assessment (identifying abnormalities, including APD, and using special techniques to evaluate associated pathology)
  • Intraocular Pressure Measurement (Goldmann applanation via slit lamp or Perkins tonometer)
  • Manual Lensometry and accurate transposition between minus and plus cylinder
  • Angle Assessment utilizing the slit lamp microscope
  • Manual Refractometry (accurate refinement using Jackson Cross-Cylinder technique, duochrome testing, and prism measurements)
  • Diagnostic testing (immersion/contact A-scan biometry, ultrasound, OCT, visual field, pachymetry, topography, dry eye testing, and fundus photography)
  • Supplemental testing (Amsler Grid, Color Vision, Stereopsis (Randot test), Exophthalmometry, BAT, and PAM)
  • Minor Procedure Assisting (excision, suturing, sterilization techniques for instruments)
  • Scribing (accurate documentation and coding for exams, consults, and surgical procedures)
  • Pharmacology (identifying, prescribing, and administering oral and intraocular medications, including understanding purpose, action, and potential side effects)

Administrative

• Maintains inventory PAR levels and orders medical/office supplies via D365.
• Completes monthly inventory counts and reports procurement concerns to the corporate office.
• Leads daily team huddles and monthly team meetings.
• Creates daily/weekly staff schedules, including last-minute adjustments.
• Collaborates with doctors on schedule templates and communicates changes to clinical and contact center teams.
• Responds to patient relations inquiries and submits complaint resolutions.
• Develops and trains on clinical standard operating procedures and new policies.
• Reports potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
• Contributes to team efforts by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
• Maintains a positive attitude, cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
• Serves as a coach and mentor to team members, fostering continuous learning and professional growth.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum five (5) years of ophthalmology experience; leadership experience preferred.
• Current iJCAHPO COA certification required.
• Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
