About the Role

The Ophthalmic Scribe is a valuable member of the eye care team, primarily responsible for assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in documenting patient encounters and ensuring accurate medical records. Their role involves real-time transcription and administrative support during clinical visits. Scribes may assist with patient care as directed by the physician, including duties of an Ophthalmic Assistant and/or Technician. This position is available at all 5 locations.

Responsibilities

  • Document patients accurately and efficiently in electronic health records (EHR) or other designated systems, capturing medical history, chief complaints, examination findings, and treatment plans.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of patient records by reviewing documentation for inconsistencies, missing information, and proper coding.
  • Prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are properly equipped with necessary instruments, supplies, and patient education materials.
  • Adhere to legal and regulatory requirements, such as HIPAA guidelines, to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Collaborate closely with ophthalmologists/optometrists to transcribe and enter information via verbal or written communication into patient records, ensuring clarity, coherence, and adherence to established protocols.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical coding and billing processes.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • Strong typing and data entry skills with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Completion of a medical scribe training program or previous experience as a medical scribe is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with medical practice management and electronic medical record software.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • IJCAHPO’s Ophthalmic Scribe Certification preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Stand, walk, and sit.
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to stay focused.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
