About the role
MCE Dirtworks, Inc. is a Cape Cod-based heavy construction and paving company serving residential, commercial, municipal, and public-sector clients throughout Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts. Our work includes municipal roadway projects, civil infrastructure work, utility installation, drainage infrastructure, excavation, grading, asphalt paving, commercial and residential site development, and related site work projects. We are seeking an experienced Operator Foreman to join our growing operations team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise field crews on excavation, grading, drainage, utility, paving, roadway, municipal, and civil/site work projects.
- Cook up daily manpower, trucking, equipment usage, materials, and site activities.
- Coordinate tasks according to priorities, schedules, site conditions, and production goals.
- Work closely with ownership, project managers, subcontractors, inspectors, vendors, and customers throughout daily field operations.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites.
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, rollers, graders, dozers, compactors, backhoes, and related construction equipment.
- Read and interpret construction plans, grades, elevations, layouts, stakes, and project specifications.
- Perform and oversee excavation, grading, trenching, drainage installation, utility installation, compaction, base preparation, and finish grading work.
- Support and execute municipal roadway, drainage, utility, paving, and civil infrastructure projects in accordance with project specifications, safety requirements, and public-sector standards.
- Support layout and grading operations using lasers, transits, GPS, Trimble, or similar field technology where applicable.
- Load and unload equipment and assist with moving equipment between jobsites when needed.
- Identify and resolve field issues related to utilities, grades, weather, materials, manpower, equipment, traffic/public access, or site conditions.
- Escalate significant jobsite, safety, scheduling, utility, equipment, manpower, or customer issues immediately to the Project Manager and/or Ownership team to help prevent delays, rework, or cost overruns.
- Track and sign off on daily field crew time for assigned projects.
- Ensure all delivery tickets, trucking slips, hauling tickets, subcontractor documentation, and related field paperwork are collected, organized, and submitted to the back office daily as required.
- Absorb quantities, deliveries, tickets, crew time, and daily production activities.
- Ensure all safety precautions, company procedures, public-sector requirements, and quality standards are consistently followed.
- Supervise the proper use, operation, and care of machinery, tools, and equipment.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and communicate maintenance or repair needs promptly.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in heavy construction, civil construction, excavation, grading, utilities, paving, drainage, roadway work, site work, or related construction required.
- Prior experience as a Foreman, Working Foreman, Lead Operator, Utility Foreman, Site Supervisor, or similar leadership role strongly preferred.
- Experience with municipal/public-sector, roadway, utility, drainage, or civil infrastructure projects strongly preferred.
- Experience installing utilities including water, sewer, drainage, or underground infrastructure preferred.
- Familiarity with prevailing wage projects, public-sector specifications, inspectors, and jobsite documentation preferred.
- Strong operating experience with excavators, loaders, skid steers, rollers, graders, dozers, compactors, and related heavy equipment required.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grades, elevations, and project specifications.
- Experience with site layout, lasers, transits, GPS, Trimble, or related field technology preferred.
- Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, email, Microsoft Office products, PDFs, and construction-related technology for communication, documentation, field reporting, and daily operations.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work safely and maintain productivity in a fast-paced outdoor construction environment.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with crews, project managers, inspectors, subcontractors, vendors, customers, and back-office personnel.
- Valid driver’s license required. CDL Class A is a plus.
- Massachusetts Hoisting License required or must be obtained upon hire.
- OSHA 10 required or must be obtained upon hire.
- Ability to work overtime, early mornings, weekends, and seasonal schedules as required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay range: $35–$50 per hour, based on experience, licensing, equipment operating ability, and foreman/leadership background.
- Prevailing wage rates may apply on eligible public-sector projects.
