Operations Manager - Transportation (Supply Chain/Logistics)

Penske Logistics is seeking a proven leader with relevant experience and skills to join our team of transportation and logistics professionals. We are looking for a candidate to supervise drivers at one of our locations, providing leadership to ensure customer requirements are achieved while meeting Penske's goals and objectives.

About the Role

Lead teams in a dynamic operational environment to consistently exceed established goals, demonstrating a commitment to customers and a dedication to excellence and innovation. Develop forward-looking plans and turn those plans into successful execution while effectively managing resources to achieve operational excellence and meet or exceed the site financial operating plan. Implement and maintain an incident-free safety culture. In this role, the Operations Manager will be bonus-eligible based on individual and location performance.

Responsibilities

  • People
    • Establish and sustain training and competency for all supervisors and associates, ensuring they understand how their work relates to customers' business objectives.
    • Recruit, hire, train, develop, and retain quality associates.
    • Foster effective, two-way communication that informs, motivates, and recognizes excellence among team members.
    • Build and sustain strong relationships with associates, customers, and supporting departments.
  • Operations
    • Meet or exceed all customer key performance metrics and objectives.
    • Interact daily with the local customer to understand existing and emerging needs.
    • Lead the team to identify operational improvements in route optimization, carrier selection, backhauls, and trailer loading.
    • Collaborate with other Penske sites to share best practices and leverage resources/assets.
  • Finance
    • Develop and execute the annual financial and operating plan.
    • Lead the operation with integrity to meet or exceed Business Plan targets.
    • Identify issues with operating metrics and P&L, making required adjustments in a timely manner.
    • Ensure accurate and timely customer billings, associate payroll, payables, intercompany charges, and P&L activities.
  • Safety
    • Lead a culture of safety through personal example.
    • Develop, execute, and assess a continuous improvement plan to reduce accident and injury frequency.
    • Ensure each associate understands their individual and group safety roles and responsibilities.
    • Proactively identify and correct unsafe conditions, work processes, and behaviors.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies, company policies, and procedures.
    • Conduct safety observations and coaching.
  • Growth/Customer Experience
    • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and challenge the status quo.
    • Execute a process to track and record value delivered to the customer.
    • Identify and seize profitable business opportunities for the customer and Penske.
    • Utilize available metrics to monitor and maximize customer efficiencies and achieve cost savings.
  • Fleet/Assets
    • Improve fleet/equipment utilization, maintenance availability, and fuel efficiency.
    • Contribute to equipment specification at start-up and renewal.
    • Build strong working relationships with local PTL district and other equipment vendors.
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • 4–6 years of related functional experience.
  • 3+ years of managerial or supervisory experience with DOT-regulated positions required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to connect and build rapport with associates and external customers at all levels.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and follow-up/follow-through.
  • Ability to manage problems independently and make decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute an annual financial operating plan.
  • Ability to drive process improvement and lead change.
  • Strong sense of ownership and responsibility for running the operation with urgency.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including active listening and presentation abilities.
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, and work at the specified location.
  • Must complete a Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (including past employment, education, and criminal history), and drug screening.

Preferred Experience

  • Current/recent senior-level management over leaders.
  • Transportation leadership experience managing a mid-size to large-size team.
  • Proven experience training and developing associates.
  • Metrics experience and strong knowledge of DOT regulations.
  • Experience overseeing a team of CDL Class A drivers and equipment.
  • Experience with driver tracking, hours of service (HOS), route management, and ensuring on-time deliveries.
  • Data auditing, field observation, and positive coaching techniques.
  • Strong communication, engagement, and interpersonal skills.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM – 4:30 PM (Hours vary depending on business needs).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to read, communicate verbally and in writing, remember and analyze information, and understand instructions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands to touch, handle, and feel.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
