Operating Apprentice 1
About the role
This is an entry level position designed to train you on the basic operation of planers or sawmills. You will learn various machines and tasks, with a significant portion of your time spent standing and walking.
Responsibilities
- Frequently pick up pieces of board from table height or the floor, which weigh on average 5-35 lbs., occasionally more.
- Participate in clean-up activities such as sweeping, shoveling, and lifting.
- Eventually be assigned to a specific area and trained to perform the operator's job there, assisting and "breaking out" the operator.
- Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Receive a pay increase once certified on a machine.
Requirements
- Minimal sitting
- Occasional repetitive hand movements
- Frequent bending, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching
- Occasional twisting, climbing, stooping, kneeling
- Occasional crawling or squatting
- Sweeping/shoveling
- Bending, pushing, lifting (up to 50 lbs)
Qualifications
- Wood dust below the PEL
- Occasional skin exposure to oil/grease
- Temperature extremes (work area typically not centrally heated or cooled, with a local heater/fan provided)
- Noise – hearing protection is required
