About the role
The Section of Pediatric Palliative Medicine was founded in 2022 and boasts a rapidly growing clinical program, with inpatient and outpatient services at a large academic health system, in the freestanding Children’s Hospital Colorado. Consistently, University of Colorado Dept of Pediatrics has been ranked a top 10 academic program in the country, and Children’s Hospital Colorado as a USNWR Top 10 children’s hospital in the country. Within this esteemed system, the section prides itself on passion, innovation, and a flexible growth mindset with aspirational visions of being a top palliative medicine program in the country and is looking for creative leaders in the field to join this incredible team.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive, focused assessment of children and families with palliative care needs.
- Formulate, implement, monitor, evaluate, and modify palliative care plans and program activities with input from palliative care team and other collaborating care providers.
- Engage in quality improvement in patent care services and department functions, including evaluating the effectiveness of the healthcare delivery system in meeting the healthcare needs of pediatric palliative care patients and families.
- Collaboration on system-wide education initiatives within the scope of palliative medicine.
- Participate in pediatric palliative care research, including quality and performance improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate accountability for evaluations of clinical practice, including adherence to organizations, state and national practice standards and codes.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below.
- Rank at the time of appointment will be based on the candidate’s demonstrated contributions and experience in teaching, clinical, research, and/or service to the field.

Preferred Qualifications
- Comfortable working in high census academic setting.
- Palliative Program Leadership.
- Experience in contributing to program growth in areas of outpatient care and community hospice care.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of a variety of management of common pediatric and adolescent medical conditions, in the inpatient/outpatient and home-based hospice settings.
- Skills in the effective delivery of healthcare via phone and telehealth services.
- Strong spirit of collaboration and skills in working with an interdisciplinary team.
- Wide spectrum of knowledge of pediatric disease, pediatric prognostication and pediatric pain/symptom management.
- Highly skilled in empathic communication.
- Experience and desire to educate on the principles of pediatric palliative care.
- Superior organizational and prioritization skills, problem solving, and collaboration skills are necessary.
- Expertise and training in history and physical examinations and determination of treatment plans necessary.
