On a quest to college and career — senior is up for the challenge

Rising Lee High School senior Emilio Ayala-Cano is actively involved in Spanish club, chess club, student council, and Grand Valley State University’s TRIO Upward Bound Math Science program in Wyoming. Known for his academic success and friendly personality, Emilio was selected as one of fewer than 4,000 high school juniors nationwide to participate in the QuestBridge College Prep Scholar program.

About the Program

QuestBridge helps high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds apply for early admission and full four-year scholarships at 55 partner colleges. Emilio applied after learning about the program from his chemistry teacher, Brian McKanna. His application included a 400-word essay and a list of extracurriculars and job experiences, where he highlighted his financial need and work supporting his family.

Background and Inspiration

Emilio’s parents immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico in their early 20s. He credits his father for his support in academics and extracurriculars, drawing inspiration from his father’s perseverance in building a life for their family. Emilio was surprised but excited to be accepted into the QuestBridge program in April.

College and Career Goals

As part of the program, Emilio attended the National College Admissions Conference at Northwestern University, where he gained insights into college applications, scholarships, and financial aid. He is considering a career in civil engineering or the medical field and has the University of Michigan as his top college choice, though he remains open to Ivy League schools through QuestBridge connections.

Community Impact

Emilio’s science teacher, Brian McKanna, believes students like Emilio can succeed anywhere with effort and self-belief. Emilio has also co-founded an after-school SAT study group with his friend Ulises Lopez-Solis, helping peers prepare for the test. Outside of school, he works at Menards, balancing his schedule to maintain his commitments.

Future Aspirations

Emilio is proud of his achievements and aims to do more, including starting a nonprofit to help those who can’t afford healthcare or are in debt. He credits his community, teachers, and TRIO interim director Jullianie Vazquez for their support in his journey.
