About the role
This is a non-civil service position responsible for translating and communicating in Spanish and English with the public and court personnel in General Sessions Court. The role assists all General Sessions Court departments, specifically Probation, Traffic School, and the courts (outside of the courtroom) with translation by speaking Spanish.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with the Probation Director, Court Administration, and judges to assist with translation needs in the Probation Department, intake rooms, outside the courtrooms, public hallways, and as directed.
- Translates Spanish and English to the public and litigants outside the courtroom, hallways, and public areas to promote fairness for Spanish-speaking individuals.
- Maintains spreadsheets and statistical information on persons assisted.
- Works with the Court Administration Office for monthly performance measure accountability developed for the mayor’s office.
- Maintains a working relationship with court personnel.
- Maintains accurate records and prepares reports as directed.
- Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, fluently in Spanish and English.
- Suggests changes in an efficient and productive manner.
- Provides translation of court forms from English to Spanish to facilitate navigation for limited English proficiency (LEP) individuals.
- Performs a variety of entry-level clerical, administrative, and customer service-oriented duties.
- Assists the public with translation needs via phone and in person.
- Deals effectively with the public and translates written materials.
- Assists the Probation Department and Traffic School staff by translating English to Spanish to improve efficiency.
- Adapts and communicates effectively during difficult situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Probation Director, Court Administrator, or Judges.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of clerical/administrative experience.
- Fluent in Spanish and English.
- Valid Driver License.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents within six (6) months of employment.

- Proficiency with computer systems, including database entry and report generation.
