About the Role

Responsible for providing professional nursing care to oncology patients in an office setting. This includes education and management of oral chemotherapy care plans, general nursing duties, and carrying out physician orders such as assisting with procedures, administering injections, performing phlebotomy, PICC line care, VAD care, Hickman/Broviac care and maintenance, wound care, patient triage, and prescription coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with patient care, including setting up equipment, administering injections, and ensuring proper documentation in medical records.
  • Triage patients over the phone and in person; instruct and inform patients about physician orders, lab results, and medication instructions using the teach-back method.
  • Process chemotherapy orders, notify physicians of patient needs or condition changes, and document all chemotherapy-related procedures in the EHR.
  • Perform chemotherapy dose limit checking, adjustments, and banding, including drug interaction checks (drug/drug, drug/allergy, drug/diagnosis, drug/gender) and medication reconciliation.
  • Determine and apply appropriate nursing care models; regularly re-evaluate patient needs and counsel patients, families, and significant others.
  • Insert intravenous cannulas, administer prescribed intravenous solutions and medications, and monitor infusion sites.
  • Refer patients to Hospital Social Worker, Nurse Navigator, Financial Counselor, Dietician, Home Health, DME, or Hospice as appropriate.
  • Prepare clinical records and progress notes for each patient visit in a timely manner.
  • Participate in educational in-service programs and stay current with trends in oncology care.
  • Communicate with billing staff to facilitate insurance approvals for medications, including chemotherapy, prior to administration.
  • Maintain, sterilize, and calibrate medical instruments; coordinate supply levels and stock exam rooms.
  • Notify billing team to pre-certify patients for inpatient admissions, outpatient procedures, and other visits requiring prior approval.
  • Document all unusual situations internally and externally to maintain accurate patient records; complete Online Occurrence reporting as needed.
  • Keep the work area neat and orderly; ensure necessary supplies are available.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current South Carolina license as a Registered Nurse.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification required within 6 months of hire; recertification as required.
  • BLS and CPR certification.
  • National Oncology Certification within 2 years of hire.
  • Strong analytical skills with in-depth knowledge of cancer and cancer therapy.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in PICC line care, VAD care, Hickman/Broviac care and maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients of all ages (Adult: 18–65 years; Geriatric: Over 65 years).
  • Awareness of cost containment and drug waste avoidance.
  • Compliance with OSHA and CLIA health and safety regulations.

Sign-on bonus of up to $10,000.

Schedule

Full-time day shift: 0800 – 1630.
