Job Description Summary
It is the responsibility of the OB Surgical Technologist to function under the direct supervision of an RN while performing the scrub role on the intraoperative team and/or assisting with other patient care activities, and in accordance with department policies and procedures, to provide for the care needs of the patient with a focus on those treatments and services which do not require state licensure. In addition to the unit specific duties and responsibilities, OB Techs will provide for the hygiene and personal care of the patient, assist with the activities of daily living, and measure and record vital signs.
Job Specifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program. Completion of Certification program and exam preferred, and required for Certified level (CST-Certified Surgical Technician).
- Experience: Two years recent hospital or health care facility experience required. Two years current OB Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
- Licenses and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire. Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) Required within 30 days of hire. Certified Surgical Tech (CST) preferred at hire.
Prerequisite Skills
- Knowledge: of surgical techniques, anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology. Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, and equipment and supplies.
- Skills: Ability to work independently, interdependently and under supervision within department and hospital policies. Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills required. Ability to function in an intermittently stressful environment. Ability to read, speak, write clearly and legibly, and understand and follow English verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish priorities and follow through on assigned tasks. Ability to communicate clearly, work tactfully and effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, team members and other hospital staff. Knowledge of medical terminology. Proficient with current in-house computer systems. Ability to work effectively as a team member and contribute positively towards the goals of the team and the organization. Maintain a calm demeanor while working in an atmosphere of conflicting demands.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Essential (Not Modifiable):
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to aseptic technique principles and practices.
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization principles and methods.
- Assists with patient care plan and implementation, utilizing knowledge of surgical techniques, procedures and physician preference guidelines.
- Demonstrates and monitors aseptic technique principle during preparation and maintenance of the sterile field, including scrubbed team members.
- Validates supply and instrument sterility which includes checking package, wrap or container integrity, chemical indicators and expiration dates.
- Utilizes cost effective practices through judicious supply use and selective opening and/or preparation of surgeon preferences.
- Maintains accurate count of all sponges, needles, or other items to be counted before, during and at wound closure.
- Performs all tasks required of the scrub including but not limited to skin preparation; positioning assistance; gowning and gloving of self and others; draping; sterile field preparation; counts; preparation and passing of instruments, supplies, equipment; safe handling/disposition of sharps; accurate measuring of fluids on the sterile field; applies sterile dressing; safe disposal of drapes, sponges, sharps, instruments and liquid waste.
- Cares for specimens in accordance with all policies and procedures which apply to specimen handling, processing and accountability.
- Prepares instruments and equipment for terminal cleaning and transports on case cart to SPD.
- Willingly shares knowledge and skills with all other team members.
- Notifies SPD of malfunctioning or broken instruments or equipment.
- Implements adult learning theories when teaching surgical technologist role.
- Secondary (Modifiable):
- Attends educational and training seminars which further own knowledge and skill base.
- Supports and participates in new programs and/or plans for change which maintains or improves quality patient care.
