OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech- Per Diem

Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department’s mission through interactions with staff, manager, and others. The primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for radiologists while implementing policy and procedures as determined by the manager and lead technologist.

Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of exams as required for proper departmental workflow.
• Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures (e.g., biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative).
• Covers the department as determined necessary by the Manager or Lead Technologist to satisfy operational requirements.
• Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.
• Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.
• Prepares patients for exams, ensuring patient comfort and modesty at all times.
• Assumes responsibility for patient safety during sonographic exams.
• Follows all departmental policies and procedures.
• Sets up equipment and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure patient comfort, safety, and prevent compromised data acquisition or musculoskeletal injury.
• Performs duties across all department areas, including all campuses and outside Ultrasound when appropriate for the hospital mission.
• Works scheduled hours or overtime as required for department needs.
• Performs appropriate studies as determined by policy and procedure.
• Follows requisitions to provide the proper study for patients and ensures exams match patient condition/history; seeks additional information when necessary.
• Identifies and documents any limitations to the sonographic exam.
• Provides additional views and variations of techniques as required by Radiologists, Manager, or Lead Technologist.
• Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
• Maintains equipment through interaction with management and department service vendors to maximize uptime and patient care while minimizing cost impact.
• Keeps exam rooms clean, tidy, and ready for use.
• Follows all high-level disinfection policies and procedures.
• Delivers patient-focused customer service, meeting appropriate standards.
• Communicates with patients in a manner appropriate to their ability to understand.
• Handles telephone calls and service requests professionally.
• Treats patients and staff with dignity and respect; reports problems to the manager.
• Accommodates patient and staffing needs through scheduling flexibility and timeliness of studies.
• Provides information on reports as necessary and appropriate.
• Minimizes patient exposure to departmental conversations and inappropriate behavior.
• Monitors patient conditions and takes action when assistance is required (e.g., nursing involvement, further monitoring).
• Competently and efficiently operates electronic systems such as PACS, RIS, Epic, and others as required.
• Ensures proper documentation, including requisitions, procedure completion, and recording of hospital/department/insurance requirements for billing.
• Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision-making to facilitate the division’s mission.
• Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned or necessary.
• Adheres to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree (or equivalent from a two-year college) or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography must be obtained prior to hire.
• American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification (OB or AB or RVT) required; accreditation must be attained prior to hire except for OB/GYN (one year to obtain accreditation).
• Experience in a related clinical area is preferred.

Skills

• Knowledge of principles and procedures of Ultrasound and the operation and maintenance of Ultrasound equipment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students, and physicians.

Special Working Conditions

The Ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage, so staff may occasionally need to work overtime or cover shifts other than their own.

Pay

Compensation range: $48.90–$62.03 per hour. This range is based on minimum job qualifications and considers factors such as education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to the position.
