O.R. Assistant

About the Role

The Operating Room Assistant is responsible for following hospital regulations and policies regarding cleaning, biohazard waste disposal, linen distribution, restocking, and communication with ancillary departments as needed. This individual may also assist in an OR suite with limited patient care, such as moving, transporting, or aiding the RN Circulator with limited patient contact.

Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Maintaining cleanliness of the operating rooms.
• Demonstrating ability to clean and damp dust vents and high surface areas.
• Appropriately utilizing the Universal Protocol as directed.
• Cleaning and disinfecting floors, walls, and horizontal surfaces according to assigned schedule and infection control standards.
• Collecting soiled linen in closed bags and transporting it to laundry receptacle.
• Assisting with proper positioning of patients when directed.
• Performing duties such as dusting, surface disinfection, mopping, sweeping, and buffing.
• Demonstrating knowledge of handling both regular and biohazard trash and containers.
• Ensuring turnovers are timely while maintaining attention to detail, including proper room set-up, suction canisters, and terminal cleaning.
• Safely transporting patients with concern for patient comfort and safety.
• Handling specimens competently and in a timely manner, anticipating the needs of the surgical team according to the daily schedule.
• Competently performing unit-specific procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Uses time efficiently and must be detail-oriented with follow-through on assigned tasks.
• Operates floor scrubbers and uses cleaning solutions as per training.
• Regularly works with various cleaning chemicals.
• Work requires a variety of physical activities, including standing and walking for long periods, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
• The work environment may be physically confining.
• Visual acuity is required for specific activities.
• Must have normal hearing or utilize adaptive hearing devices if duties require listening with a stethoscope (e.g., breath sounds, heart sounds, bowel sounds).
