About the Role
Supervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development. Determines and maintains unit or program needs and standards using the nursing process and evidence-based information. Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into job performance. Assists the Clinical Director in managing the unit's assigned staff and patient population, provides direct patient care according to unit/program needs, and collaborates with physicians in executing the medical plan of care.
All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of stroke symptoms, warning signs, protocols, pathways, NIHSS Stroke Alert activation, stroke quality indicators, patient education materials, community resources, and Stroke Center website resources.
Responsibilities
- Oversees staff to ensure adequate patient care, including hiring, onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and developing employees.
- Establishes or contributes to care plans, administers medication, checks dosages, avoids interactions, manages IV lines, administers therapies, observes and records patient conditions, and consults with physicians.
- Ensures compliance with policies and financial stewardship by maintaining department budget integrity.
- Serves as a resource to staff, patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and visitors to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes.
- Teaches patients and families about illness/injury management, post-treatment care, home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-administration of medication/therapy.
- Facilitates inter/intra-departmental collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
- Participates in policy revisions, committees, and goal/action planning for the unit.
- Contributes to recruitment and retention of staff through role-modeling, fostering peer relationships, and participating in preceptor/mentor programs.
- Coordinates educational and professional activities related to department/unit needs.
- Regularly rounds with physicians, patients, or families to improve quality practice and patient experience.
- Utilizes the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide and evaluate patient care.
- Initiates and supports quality improvement initiatives and uses resources effectively.
- Directs staff in applying the nursing process and coordinates patient care to enhance independent functioning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN, BScN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution.
- Legally licensed to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Arizona.
- 2 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience (3 years preferred).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification.
- Must obtain a certification in the respective area of expertise within 1 year of hire or promotion for Magnet standards.
