Nursing Supervisor
About the Role
The Emergency Department Supervisor provides leadership support as part of the unit management team, supporting the Nurse Manager in their responsibility for the development, implementation, and evaluation of care provided in the patient care department(s). This role carries out the day-to-day operations plan of the department, serves as a clinical resource to other healthcare team members, and may assume a patient care assignment based on department needs. The Unit Supervisor coordinates unit management activities and department staff development in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and/or Director.
Schedule
Full-time, 40 hours per week. Shifts are Monday–Friday, midshifts to evening shifts, with occasional weekend coverage required based on operational needs. Shifts may be either 8 or 10 hours.
Responsibilities
- Leadership
- Evaluates daily staffing needs if serving in a charge RN role and collaborates with the leadership team to make adjustments.
- Commits to flexible hours to achieve outcomes and provide round-the-clock leadership.
- Serves as a resource in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
- Assists in creating a positive work environment that contributes to safe and positive clinical outcomes.
- Supports orientation, competency training, and continuing education for new and existing staff.
- Participates in department and hospital shared governance and performance improvement activities.
- Incorporates the St. Luke’s Hospital’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into daily nursing practice.
- Effective Communication
- Follows up on patient concerns in the absence of the Nurse Manager and escalates potential risks.
- Builds collaborative relationships with staff, peers, providers, and administration.
- Empowers staff to take ownership and accountability for their work and environment.
- Professional Development of Team Members
- Supports orientation, competency training, and continuing education for staff.
- Encourages staff engagement in shared governance and performance improvement.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited nursing program.
- Expected to obtain a BSN degree within 3 years of accepting the position.
- Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or a compact state.
- Maintains current BLS, PALS, TNCC, and ACLS certifications.
- Successful completion of CPI Training.
- Fluent in written and spoken English.
- Ability to lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams.
- Comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory, practice, and specialized patient care concepts.
- Ability to enhance knowledge through self-directed study and educational opportunities.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Ability to use standard equipment required for the position.
