About the Role
Under the general supervision of the CNO, the Nursing Supervisor is responsible for nursing supervision of the hospital, ensuring high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Ensures nursing standards of care in accordance with the New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act and Huggins Hospital policies and procedures.
- Assesses patient care needs (inpatient and ambulatory) and coordinates delivery of competent clinical nursing care, adhering to ethical standards as defined by the ANA code of ethics.
- Makes clinical decisions based on nursing knowledge and sound judgment; collaborates with medical colleagues to problem-solve effectively.
- Takes immediate action to ensure patient and staff safety.
- Monitors bed management and patient flow, including Utilization Management procedures and Critical Access Hospital rules; keeps leadership informed of bed status and divert status.
- Maintains Nursing Supervisor communication documentation and electronic log books for admissions, discharges, transfers, deaths, quality tracking, and unusual occurrences.
- Updates the Risk Web Ambulance Transfer Log with daily activity.
- Assists with direct nursing care as needed, functioning as an extra resource across all nursing areas.
- Mentors and role models for nursing staff, demonstrating professionalism and a caring attitude while providing feedback on developmental needs.
- Fosters autonomy, accountability, and professional growth among staff.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, publications, networking, and professional societies.
- Manages safe and adequate staffing on a shift-by-shift basis, anticipating needs and planning for the next 24 to 72 hours; communicates changes to Nursing Directors.
- Tracks staff sick calls and makes contingency plans to ensure adequate coverage.
- Reports facilities, equipment, computer, infection prevention, and employee health issues using established mechanisms (e.g., electronic work requests, IT Help Desk tickets, Risk Web incident reporting).
- Procures necessary medications from the pharmacy; issues overnight supplies for inpatients and ER patients when the pharmacist is not on duty.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the Hospital Incident Command System, coordinating emergency resources and communicating effectively with leadership, staff, and outside agencies during disasters.
- Ensures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes, and recommending adjustments as needed.
- Adheres to Infection Prevention standards, including hand hygiene and precautionary measures, and holds team members accountable for the same.
- Participates in quality review, performance improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
- Recognizes and reports suspected abuse/neglect (e.g., child, elder, sexual, spousal) and collaborates with medical staff to ensure reporting to appropriate authorities.
- Meets organizational expectations for attendance, HIPAA compliance, internal communication, interpersonal relationships, and workplace safety.
- Actively participates in hospital Service Excellence initiatives, trainings, and department staff meetings (minimum 50% attendance; reviews 100% of meeting minutes).
- Completes all required annual education by the due date.
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of New Hampshire.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
Skills and Abilities
- Minimal physical effort required, including occasional light lifting (up to 25 pounds), stooping, and fine motor tasks (e.g., typing, pinching).
- Ability to manage considerable mental stress effectively.
- Strong verbal communication skills to express ideas and receive detailed information through oral communication.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately with co-workers.
- Familiarity with computers and other business machines.
