Come be a part of our Fairview team on our newly remodeled adult Med/Surg Unit as a Nursing Station Technician at University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank Campus. We specialize in innovation, continually improving patients' lives through groundbreaking technology and treatments, and partner with the University of Minnesota Medical School and University of Minnesota Physicians to deliver breakthrough care and train future physicians. The West Bank campus is conveniently located off I-94 and Riverside Ave, near downtown Minneapolis.

About This Unit

This 24-bed unit features private rooms and manages post-surgical populations including gyn, bariatric, and urology patients, as well as medical telemetry.

Schedule

  • 60 hours (.75 FTE) every two weeks
  • Night shifts: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM, 12-hour shifts
  • Every third weekend rotation

Responsibilities

  • Work under the direct supervision of an RN to provide excellent customer service, teamwork, and communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Patient personal care and interventions:
    • Answer patient call lights promptly for both assigned and other patients.
    • Assist patients with grooming, hygiene, skin integrity, personal comfort, and population-specific needs.
    • Provide assistance with ambulation, transfer, positioning, and range of motion (ROM) according to activity orders.
    • Implement fall prevention activities as specified in the plan of care.
  • Assist in specimen collection.
  • Support the RN with admission, transfer, discharge, and post-mortem care.
  • Provide bedside 1:1 attendant support.
  • Set up and maintain orderly patient rooms.
  • Observe, collect, and document health status data:
    • Obtain vital signs, intake/output recordings, weights, and glucometer checks.
    • Report abnormal results to RN.
    • Document according to guidelines.
  • Contribute to a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees; uphold Fairview values and demonstrate professional communication and accountability.
  • Report environmental risks or equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Use equipment following policies, procedures, and manufacturer directions or standards.
  • Handle hazardous waste (identify, segregate, and dispose of hazardous waste; ensure container integrity).

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required. OnTrack participants must obtain this certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
  • One or more of the following:
    • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program.
    • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long-term, home care, or acute care setting (e.g., Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant, or Emergency Room Technician).
    • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, with completion of one semester of clinical rotation.
    • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (not required to maintain throughout employment or for subsequent transfers into similar roles).
