Responsibilities
- Aid physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures.
- Procure equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
- In the psychiatric setting, assist with reality orientation, behavior modification plans/therapy, provide informal support therapy, verbal de-escalation, physical management of aggressive patients, facilitate play for children, and monitor therapeutic activities.
- Observe, collect, and document patient information, reporting significant changes to a registered nurse or physician.
- Assist with patient admissions, orientation, and discharge processes.
- Provide care/treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital sign measurements, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, blood glucose checks, wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient interactions.
- Perform direct personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
- Perform indirect care tasks like cleaning the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, cleaning/instrument sterilization, transporting patients/specimens, orienting new employees/students, and some routine clerical functions.
- Reinforce teaching given by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding.
- Distribute patient education materials upon request.
Requirements
- No formal education required, but must meet all other position requirements.
- Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Fluent in verbal and written English, and able to develop basic computer skills.
