Nursing Assistant CNA - Inpatient Oncology

About the Role

This position involves providing direct patient care in oncology and hospice units at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center. The units include 12S – Oncology & Hospice (a 24-bed solid tumor, palliative, and hospice care unit) and 12T – Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant (a 24-bed unit specializing in blood cancers, chemotherapy, and autologous stem cell transplants). These units serve highly acute cancer patients and are among the few in Wisconsin qualified to deliver multiple forms of chemotherapy.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate, and oxygen levels; report abnormalities to nursing staff.
• Test urine pH levels after patients receive certain medications.
• Assist patients with personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and hydration.
• Support patient mobility, including transfers from bed to wheelchair, repositioning bedridden patients, and escorting patients to other departments for tests or procedures.
• Maintain a sterile environment by cleaning rooms, changing linens, sanitizing equipment, and administering CHG treatments to prevent infections.
• Manage inventory of medical supplies, linens, and personal care items; ensure equipment is clean and ready for use.
• Provide emotional and psychological support, offering comfort and companionship to patients coping with fear, anxiety, and depression.
• Document patient observations, report changes in condition to nurses, and assist with admission and discharge processes.
• Follow neutropenic precautions and chemotherapy safety protocols; monitor for symptoms like pain, nausea, and fatigue.

Requirements

• High School Graduate, GED, or HSED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
• Nurse Aide certification in good standing with the State Registry in which the team member practices.

About the Units

12S – Oncology & Hospice Unit: A 24-bed unit specializing in solid tumor, palliative, and hospice care. The team develops long-term relationships with patients throughout their cancer journey and participates in community service events. Patient outcomes surpass NDNQI benchmarks in all four major nurse-sensitive indicators.

12T – Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant Unit: A 24-bed unit focused on blood cancers (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma) and autoimmune diseases. The unit administers chemotherapy and stem cell treatments and maintains full masking protocols due to immunocompromised patients.
