Nursing Assistant-Chowan (Emergency Department)

About the Role

This position performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, functioning within the framework of the NAII listing granted by the NC Board of Nursing. The Nursing Assistant may also be utilized in the Observer Role, responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

Responsibilities

• Participates in quality improvement activities, including problem-solving, data collection, and cost savings initiatives.
• Employs safe practices, infection control, and adheres to fire and disaster regulations.
• Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit or individual objectives.
• Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements and participates in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
• Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures, providing quality patient care and maintaining familiarity with job description and legal implications of the role.
• Maintains active NAI and NAII licensure/certification.
• Builds interpersonal relations and communications, including giving and receiving constructive feedback and working effectively in a team environment.
• Participates in unit goal setting and assists in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
• Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks as ascribed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and North Carolina Board of Nursing.
• With appropriate education and training, may perform other duties such as EKGs, phlebotomy, venipuncture, and assisting in patient admission, transport, and discharge.
• Monitors patients for signs of escalating behaviors and alerts the nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming themselves or others.
• Maintains the level of observation according to the patient's plan of care and communicates effectively with the patient's care team.
• Documents accurately in the medical record and provides hazard surveillance to reduce risk in the patient's physical environment.
• Engages patients appropriately in distraction activities as needed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED (preferred).
• Active NAI listing with the NC Department of Health & Human Services (required).
• Active NAII listing with the North Carolina Board of Nursing (required).
• Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification (required).
• De-escalation training (e.g., Non-violent crisis intervention or other program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire, must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment (not required for Ambulatory clinical positions).

Schedule

Part-time (PRN) position with rotating shifts, including weekends.

ECU Health Chowan Hospital in Edenton is a 25-bed critical access hospital serving 110,000 people across 6 counties. The facility offers medical and surgical services, including intensive care, a specialty care clinic, and a dedicated outpatient surgery area with endoscopy capabilities. The 7-bed emergency department serves approximately 15,000 patients per year, and team members have access to a telemedicine link with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
