The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is hiring a part-time Nurse's Aide to join their Health Care Center, supporting veterans and their dependents.

About Us

For over 140 years, DVA has been caring for veterans and their dependents through advocacy, residential and healthcare programming, and burial services. The DVA campus in Rocky Hill includes:

  • A Residential Facility offering temporary, supportive living to help veterans return to independent living.
  • The Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center, a state-of-the-art medical facility providing long-term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions requiring 24-hour assistance.

About the Role

This position is part of a comprehensive team of caring professionals passionate about improving the lives of veterans. You will assist clients in achieving success, make a difference in the public sector, and work in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist doctors and nurses in general care and well-being of patients.
  • Position, transfer, move, and lift patients.
  • Take and record temperatures, pulses, and respirations.
  • Observe patients and report unusual symptoms and/or behavior.
  • Ensure restraints are correctly applied.
  • Test urine samples for sugar and collect specimens.
  • Keep beds, bedpans, and related equipment clean.
  • Maintain unit environment for patient safety.
  • Transport patients, specimens, and related items.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, forms, requisitions, dietary orders, death paperwork, and assemble charts.
  • Feed, bathe, and massage clients; respond to their general needs.
  • Apply or remove braces.
  • Process billing and/or insurance information.
  • Act as triage and/or receptionist for incoming patients and telephone calls.
  • Schedule patient appointments and order supplies.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Nurse's Aide or one (1) year of experience in patient care in a hospital or nursing home.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with basic principles of nursing, including infection control practices.
  • Ability to deal with physically and chronically ill patients.
  • Ability to learn safety and fire procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Skilled Nursing Facility (nursing home).
  • Experience providing nursing services to patients with dementia.
  • Experience working with the veterans population.
  • Experience working with clients/patients with behavioral health issues or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Experience documenting in an Electronic Health Record (e-MAR).

Schedule

Part-Time, 32 hours per week, Second Shift (2:45pm - 11:15pm).

  • Week 1: Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  • Week 2: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Thursday

This position may be eligible for shift and weekend differential.
