The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking a qualified and experienced Nurse's Aide to join our team in the Health Care Center.

Schedule

  • Part-Time, 24 hours per week, 2nd Shift (2:45pm - 11:15pm)
  • Week 1: Saturday, Sunday, Monday
  • Week 2: Saturday, Sunday, Monday
  • Eligible for shift and weekend differential

About Us

For over 160 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. The Department serves veterans through its Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services.

The DVA campus in Rocky Hill offers two residency paths:

  • Temporary, supportive living with programming designed to return Connecticut Veterans to independent living in the community
  • Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center: a state-of-the-art medical facility providing long-term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions requiring 24-hour assistance

Purpose of the Role

In a state healthcare facility, this role provides bedside care to physically or chronically ill patients where registered or licensed practical nurse services are not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist doctors and nurses in general patient care
  • Position, transfer, move, and lift patients
  • Take and record temperatures, pulses, and respirations
  • Observe patients and report unusual symptoms or behavior
  • Ensure correct application of restraints
  • Test urine samples for sugar and collect specimens
  • Maintain cleanliness of beds, bedpans, and related equipment
  • Ensure unit environment safety
  • Transport patients, specimens, and related items
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, forms, dietary orders, and death paperwork
  • Feed, bathe, and massage clients; respond to general needs
  • Apply or remove braces
  • Process billing and/or insurance information
  • Act as triage/receptionist for incoming patients and calls
  • Schedule patient appointments and order supplies

Requirements

  • Certification as a Nurse's Aide or one year of experience in patient care in a hospital or nursing home
  • Considerable interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with basic nursing principles, including infection control
  • Ability to work with physically and chronically ill patients
  • Ability to learn safety and fire procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Skilled Nursing Facility (nursing home)
  • Experience providing nursing services to patients with dementia
  • Experience working with the veterans population
  • Experience working with clients/patients with behavioral health issues or PTSD
  • Experience documenting in an Electronic Health Record (e-MAR)
