Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Part-time) - Emergency Medicine

Location: Saint Louis, MO 63110. Scheduled hours: 20 per week (part-time).

About the Role

This Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant (NP/PA) position provides direct patient care in the Emergency Department and is assigned to at least one site. Providers may also be credentialed to practice at additional emergency departments within the system, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Barnes West County Hospital, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Christian Hospital Northeast, Christian Hospital Northwest Healthcare, Barnes-Jewish St. Peter’s Hospital, and Progress West Hospital. Emergency Medicine Physicians are available on-site 24/7 at all locations. Our clinical sites offer a mix of academic and community settings with diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care, including obtaining patient history, performing assessments, ordering/interpreting diagnostic studies, and managing acute/chronic conditions.
• Develops and implements patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, and other care providers.
• Performs preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations, and direct treatment.
• Provides counseling and education to patients and families on disease management, prevention, and quality of life improvement.
• Monitors and ensures accuracy of patient medical records; maintains required reports and statistics.
• Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referrals; performs diagnostic/therapeutic interventions as permitted by certification and state regulations.
• Champions safety and quality of care for patients using ITB therapy; serves as an expert in ITB pump management.
• Develops educational programs for patients and leads quality/safety initiatives for ITB therapy.
• Serves as a clinical expert in rehabilitation nursing with high autonomy in complex situations.
• Provides management services for clinical research study projects, including monitoring subjects and medication administration.
• Participates in quality improvement and process improvement activities for evidence-based patient care.
• Engages in professional growth through educational programs, literature, and workshops.
• Contributes to the advancement of rehabilitation nursing through research, publications, and presentations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s degree (required).
• Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross; online-only certifications without skills assessment are insufficient).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (required; online-only certifications without skills assessment are insufficient).
• For Nurse Practitioners:
  • Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse licensure (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
• For Physician Assistants:
  • Graduate of a PA program.
  • Current PA licensure in Missouri and/or Illinois (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
• Additional certifications may be required based on specialty.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minor procedural skills (e.g., suturing, abscess drainage, basic splinting).
• Emergency Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant certification or Certificate of Added Qualification in Emergency Medicine.
• 2+ years of experience in an emergency department setting.
• Master’s degree in Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Studies.

Working Conditions

• Variable work schedule, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• May require working shifts at multiple clinical sites (e.g., Barnes-Jewish, Missouri Baptist, Christian Northeast, etc.).
• Exposure to a broad range of patient acuity, from low to high complexity.
• Normal office environment with exposure to blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, and protective devices.
• Direct patient care setting with potential exposure to dust, dirt, grease, or other disagreeable elements.

Physical Effort

Pay

Salary range: $97,000 – $174,600 annually. Emergency Medicine Specialization Supplement available based on years of experience in Emergency Medicine (in addition to base salary).
