Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal

About the role

Legacy Health offers an opportunity to join a collaborative team of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs) practicing across both Level III and Level IV NICU settings within the Legacy system. NNPs attend deliveries and provide medical management for high-risk neonates and infants, including daily rounding on NNP service patients. Responsibilities also include telemedicine resuscitation coverage for Legacy Level I nursery sites and participation in non-clinical initiatives that support the highest standards of NICU care for patients and families.

Level IV NICU – Randall Children’s Hospital

The Level IV, 45-bed NICU is located within Randall Children’s Hospital, a freestanding, nine-story pediatric facility. Comprehensive care is supported by pediatric subspecialties including cardiac and neurosurgical services, genetics, and ECMO. Care is delivered within a family-integrated model with a dedicated pediatric transport team. This role does not include transport responsibilities.

Level III NICU – Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center

The Level III, 22-bed NICU at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center is a growing unit actively expanding its NNP team. Scheduling is flexible with 12-, 16-, and 24-hour shift options available to support work-life balance and team coverage.

Scheduling & Practice Model

This position is based in the Portland/Vancouver area and requires dual licensure in Oregon and Washington. NNPs rotate between both NICU sites with frequency tailored to individual preferences while ensuring 24/7 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays. A well-established self-scheduling model and structured holiday tracks contribute to provider satisfaction and balance.

Responsibilities

• Patient Care Management: Collaborate with Neonatologists, pediatric subspecialists, pediatricians, and obstetricians to guide care across the neonatal and infant continuum; practice autonomously utilizing technical procedural skills and essential decision-making.
• Nursing Care Support: Provide ongoing support to nursing staff through unit-based care and formal education; lead patient care projects that enhance both nursing care and medical management.
• Resuscitation: Attend deliveries in person at each medical center and via telehealth at Level I nursery sites to ensure consistent high-level care throughout the Legacy system.
• Discharge Planning: Participate in an integrated family care experience to support families in caring for high-risk infants within the NICU and beyond; contribute alongside neonatal RTs, dietitians, OT/PT, lactation consultants, nursing, medical, and leadership staff.

Qualifications

• Education: As required by licensure.
• Experience: Minimum 2 years as an NICU Staff Nurse; Level III experience preferred.
• Licensure: Current RN license; National Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP); current state NNP license with prescriptive privileges; credentialed by Legacy Medical Staff for Category I and II privileges; NRP certification from the American Heart Association.
• Preferred: Completion of ECMO certification course.
