Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal

About the role

Provide direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and technical procedures to a group of normal to high‑risk infants. Manages neonatal case load with physician consultation and collaboration. Serves as a patient and family advocate in identifying healthcare needs and actions for neonatal cases. Coordinates pre‑ and post‑operative care activities for normal to high‑risk infants. Supports neonatal units during crisis situations. Utilizes planning, implementation, and evaluation in formulating neonatal diagnosis and intervention.

Responsibilities

• Interpret antenatal/perinatal health history and assess gestational age.
• Perform newborn resuscitations in delivery rooms and neonatal units using bag‑mask ventilation, laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation, cardiac compressions, intravenous access and emergency medications.
• Provide care for infants on well‑newborn units, including assessments, admissions, discharges, physical exams and evaluations in Delivery, Neonatal and Mother‑Baby units.
• Perform specialized procedures on high‑risk infants such as umbilical artery and vein catheterization, endotracheal intubation, suprapubic bladder tap, lumbar puncture, peripheral central venous catheterization, peripheral arterial catheterization, needle aspiration of pneumothorax, sepsis work‑ups and other clinically‑competent advanced‑practice procedures.
• Order and interpret laboratory tests, radiographs and routine diagnostics, including newborn screening, head ultrasounds, ophthalmic retinal and outpatient evaluations.
• Manage inspired oxygen concentration and mechanical ventilation based on arterial blood‑gas measurements, physical exam findings, and clinical course.
• Prescribe phototherapy, antimicrobial therapy, enteral/parenteral nutrition and supplements.
• Conduct patient rounds, evaluate care and progress, develop plans of care, write orders, and document admission histories, resuscitations, assessments, procedures, progress notes and discharge summaries.
• Collaborate with attending physicians regarding treatment plans for assigned infants.
• Develop, implement, review and revise standards, procedures and protocols for neonatal care; create practice guidelines reflecting current research, trends and technology.
• Provide educational programs for staff, support quality‑improvement activities, and serve as a clinical resource.
• Participate in the Perinatal Quality Management Program and identify staff learning needs, delivering formal and informal education.
• Maintain current knowledge and skills in neonatal care and utilize resources cost‑effectively.
• Contribute to hospital/regional committees on planning, policy development, patient care and quality‑improvement issues.
• Provide direct patient care as needed to maintain clinical expertise, competency and licensing, adhering to legal, regulatory and policy requirements.
• Incorporate the KP Nursing Vision, Model and Values throughout nursing practice.

Qualifications

• Minimum two (2) years of full‑time (36 hrs/week) Level III NICU experience within the last 4 years.
• Graduate of an ANA‑approved Nurse Practitioner or Child Health Associate training program (or equivalent to meet state licensure).
• Registered Nurse license (Washington) or Compact RN license within 6 months of hire.
• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification (Oregon) or (Washington) within 6 months of hire.
• Registered Nurse license (Oregon) within 6 months of hire (if applicable).
• Drug Enforcement Administration registration.
• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certificate.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.
• Basic Life Support certification.
• National Provider Identifier required at hire.
• Thorough knowledge of common and less common diseases in the specialty field; familiarity with state health‑care laws, licensing board regulations and controlled‑substance regulations.
• Ability to assess, diagnose and treat common medical diseases and injuries; proficient with procedural/testing equipment and high patient volume.
• Minor surgery or surgical assist skills.
• Customer‑focused service skills.
• Flexibility to work variable days and schedules, including weekends, holidays, evenings and night shifts.
• Ability to travel to secondary Kaiser site if indicated.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum five (5) years of full‑time (36 hrs/week) Level III NICU experience within the last 7 years.
• Graduate of an ANA‑approved Nurse Practitioner training program.
