Nurse Manager- PACU/Periop - Penn Presbyterian Medical Center

About the Role

Assumes 24-hour accountability for the operation of the designated Periop/PACU unit at PPMC. This includes the provision of leadership to improve patient care, enhance professional development, and achieve nursing goals.

Responsibilities

  • Employee Engagement & Satisfaction
    • Regularly meet with employees to strengthen communication, foster engagement, and build productive working relationships.
    • Promote a culture focused on patient satisfaction, quality care, and strong financial performance.
    • Analyze employee satisfaction data and identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement action plans that improve engagement and workplace effectiveness.
    • Eliminate process workarounds and promote accountability through collaboration and problem-solving rather than blame.
  • Leadership & Operational Excellence
    • Partner with UPHS, clinical, and entity leadership to develop programs, services, and initiatives that anticipate future customer needs and support organizational growth.
    • Establish and update departmental processes and work practices that support operational excellence.
    • Drive operational integration and alignment of communications with nursing and non-nursing leadership.
    • Monitor survey feedback, analyze trends, and implement improvement strategies.
    • Share performance data with staff and facilitate collaborative improvement efforts.
    • Manage patient/client complaints and ensure timely resolution and follow-up.
    • Ensure staff understand and demonstrate service recovery best practices.
  • Quality & Patient Safety
    • Build department processes aligned with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Six Aims for Improvement: Safe, Effective, Patient-Centered, Timely, Efficient, Equitable.
    • Implement operational improvements using performance and patient safety data.
    • Maintain and communicate Environment of Care standards, including safety, security, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, medical equipment, and utility management.
    • Continuously improve operations to maintain regulatory compliance and achieve clinical excellence.
    • Participate in and support patient safety initiatives, including FMEA and RCA activities.
    • Identify, monitor, and improve quality metrics through ongoing staff engagement and action planning.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards, including TJC, Department of Health, FDA, HIPAA, HCFA, DPW, and other applicable agencies.
    • Demonstrate understanding of Magnet standards and support organizational alignment with those standards.
    • Maintain continuous survey readiness and compliance monitoring.
  • Change Management & Communication
    • Develop and implement change management strategies that support organizational goals.
    • Facilitate effective communication plans for major initiatives and organizational changes.
    • Ensure consistency of messaging across audiences while reflecting UPHS core values.
    • Manage routine and crisis communications as needed.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of change initiatives and implementation plans.
  • Nursing Leadership
    • Provide leadership and vision for the Nursing Practice Model.
    • Participate in staff selection, development, coaching, and performance evaluations.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify, share, and implement best practices.
    • Partner with physicians and administrators to advance cost-effective, high-quality patient care.
  • Shared Governance
    • Mentor unit council leadership and provide guidance in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and meeting management.
    • Support staff participation in Shared Governance activities.
    • Track and monitor release time associated with council participation.
    • Facilitate council decision-making, action planning, and achievement of established goals.
    • Assess educational and developmental needs of council members.
  • Community Engagement
    • Represent the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania within the community.
    • Support nursing participation in community outreach, health education, and screening initiatives.
    • Participate in community boards, committees, and organizations as appropriate.
    • Support nursing student clinical experiences and partnerships with schools of nursing.
  • Patient Flow & Care Coordination
    • Promote efficient patient flow through effective care coordination practices.
    • Collaborate with physicians, APNs, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize throughput and patient movement.
    • Utilize patient flow reporting to identify efficiency gaps and implement improvements.
    • Communicate patient flow successes and barriers to leadership.
  • Evidence-Based Practice & Research
    • Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Specialists and other leaders to disseminate evidence-based nursing interventions and care delivery models.
    • Support implementation of best practices that improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.
    • Partner with nursing schools and researchers to advance research-based care and nursing practice innovations.
  • Financial Management
    • Develop an understanding of healthcare revenue and reimbursement.
    • Assist in the development and management of departmental budgets.
    • Monitor financial performance and explain budget variances.
    • Review expense reports and address discrepancies.
    • Identify opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining quality outcomes.
    • Support supply value initiatives and effective resource allocation.
    • Balance staffing and financial models to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Workforce Planning & Talent Management
    • Develop workforce and succession plans for current and future staffing needs.
    • Support Magnet and Shared Governance initiatives and principles of inclusion.
  • Recruitment & Onboarding
    • Recruit and hire qualified staff who align with organizational values and operational needs.
    • Ensure effective onboarding and orientation processes.
    • Establish clear expectations, accountabilities, and performance measures during the probationary period.
  • Employee Development
    • Foster continuous professional growth and career development.
    • Create learning plans and stretch opportunities for staff.
    • Conduct timely and effective performance management activities.
    • Recognize and reward strong performance.
    • Address performance concerns promptly and directly.
    • Complete annual performance evaluations.
  • Employee Retention & Engagement
    • Implement employee retention strategies.
    • Support employee engagement survey activities and action planning.
    • Promote positive employee relations and effective communication.
    • Champion employee recognition programs.
    • Support competitive and market-based compensation practices.
  • Human Resources & Employee Safety
    • Ensure effective credentialing and monitoring processes for nursing staff.
    • Maintain compliance with labor laws and federal and state employment regulations.
    • Promote a safe working environment and support employee safety initiatives.

Requirements

  • BLS/CPR as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (Required)
  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Required)
  • Master of Science in Nursing or currently matriculated in a master's level program (Required)
  • 5+ years progressive nursing experience with demonstrated leadership and management skills (Required)
