Functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team to organize and provide quality patient care services under the supervision of a licensed professional. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promotes a safe environment at Children’s.

The Nurse Extern Program is a paid employment opportunity for nursing students interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics. As a nurse extern, you will acquire essential knowledge of the highly specialized pediatric environment to prepare for a smooth transition to practice after nursing school. You will gain access to invaluable benefits, including orientation shifts with an RN, shadowing opportunities, RN mentoring check-ins, and additional learning offerings.

Nurse externs are hired in a variety of units and have the same job responsibilities as that of an unlicensed Patient Care Technician. We offer both part-time and PRN nurse extern positions to fit your unique needs.

This is a year-round position. While start dates are listed for December 2026 and January 2027, you would continue working in your role throughout the school year. You will be required to work at least 3 shifts in a 6-week period. Start dates are variable and will be determined during the interview process.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the basic delivery of patient care as assigned by licensed professional personnel using age and developmentally appropriate standards—including vital sign assessment, patient triage, daily weights, assisting with feeds/baths/oral care, linen changes, and assisting with transports.
• Utilizes and maintains department and patient care equipment as assigned.
• Communicates information relating to patient care, job activities, needs, and responsibilities for the assigned shift to appropriate personnel.
• Uses effective organization and communication skills in prioritizing, delivering, and documenting patient care, and documents the tasks/procedures/care provided.
• Initiates and participates in continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided.
• Acts as a role model for organizational and developmental skills.
• Assists the departmental leadership team in the development of other staff members.
• Accepts responsibility for own growth, development, and professional conduct.

While clinical staff may serve a specific patient population, they have the potential to care for patients within the age population range served at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Clinical staff will have competencies that incorporate age-specific guidelines, including: Neonate (less than 30 days), Infant (30 days to 1 year), Early Childhood (1-5 years), Late Childhood (5-13 years), Adolescent (13-17 years), and Adult.

Requirements

• Must have successfully completed 1 semester of nursing school with 1 clinical rotation.
• Must be actively enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required within 30 days of employment.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and documentation of ongoing development and training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Anticipated graduation date from nursing school is at least one year from your nurse extern program start date (December 2027 or later).
