Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3/4

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

About the Role

NPI-7 is looking for a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician to join our team. The role involves providing safe, efficient, and compliant shipping of all radioactive and hazardous materials generated at various LANL facilities, including the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), and the Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility (RANT).

This position involves performing work both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions. Team members comply with nuclear management requirements, work independently on challenging concurrent projects, and collaborate closely to support LANL's national security mission.

Responsibilities

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3

• Interface with teams within the division and other groups within TA-55 and the Laboratory.
• Support activities such as handling, packaging, and documenting hazardous and radioactive materials.
• Manage RCRA storage areas.
• Ensure all results, materials, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and established requirements.

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 4

• Perform all duties outlined for the Technician 3 level.
• Manage TRU/TRU hazardous waste disposition activities throughout TA-55.
• Handle drums and other containers of waste, lift, and document hazardous and radioactive waste in accordance with written work instructions.
• Package and handle fissile material, including staging per criticality safety limits.
• Manage RCRA waste storage areas, including chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.
• Contribute to Integrated Work Documents, Detailed Operating Procedures, or other work planning documents.
• Perform upkeep and maintenance of records reflecting storage area, inventory, inspections, waste profiles, disposal requests, shipping paperwork, and waste characterization information.
• Foster a mutually respectful work environment free from discrimination and harassment.
• Follow established procedures for routine work.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements (Both Levels)

• Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems and applying analysis and testing to identify suitable solutions, including documenting and communicating results.
• Independent Judgement: Demonstrated experience performing work and prioritizing tasks with minimal supervision, as well as contributing to a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience in the proper use of personal protective equipment, including air-purifying respirators.
• Customer Service: Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.

Education/Experience

• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3: Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a High School Diploma (or equivalent, e.g., GED) per DOE 426.2A.
• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 4: Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 2 years of previous experience in hazardous material or waste management is expected.

Additional Requirements for Technician 4

• Professional Level Experience: Knowledge and experience performing PIC duties for TRU operations and handling solid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes.
• Regulations/Compliance: Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to handling solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes. Understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures. Ability to understand inspection and/or characterization data on waste containers.
• Policy/Procedures: Knowledge of the Laboratory's waste handling policies, practices, and procedures. Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas, including chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements. Knowledge and experience with lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures. Skill in preparing waste handling reports.
• Training/Certifications: Ability to maintain relevant certification and training requirements (e.g., FMH).

Qualifications

• Experience and participation in audits of material and/or management activities.
• Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure.
• Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas, including chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.
• Active Q clearance.

Desired Skills for Technician 4

• Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification.
• TA-55, RLWTF, RLUOB, and/or CMR site-specific training.

Pay

• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3: $64,700 - $101,400
• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 4: $71,200 - $112,900

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service (2 years for this position) in their current role to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.

Clearance

This position requires a Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.

This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates can successfully perform the job requirements.

Additional Details
