About the role
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician position at either the Level 3 or Level 4, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician 3:
- Support the Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) as a member of the Glovebox Downsizing Team.
- Receipt and shipment of waste containers.
- Moving containers and gloveboxes using forklifts and lifting tables.
- Manual downsizing of gloveboxes.
- Packaging glovebox components into approved waste containers.
- Handling hazardous waste.
- Operating material handling equipment.
- Performing work safely in accordance with approved procedures and conduct of operations principles.
- Support the Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) as a member of the Glovebox Downsizing Team.
- Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician 4:
- Support the Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) as a member of the Glovebox Downsizing Team.
- Receipt and shipment of waste containers.
- Moving containers and gloveboxes using forklifts and lifting tables.
- Manual downsizing of gloveboxes.
- Packaging glovebox components into approved waste containers.
- Handling hazardous waste.
- Operating material handling equipment.
- Performing work safely in accordance with approved procedures and conduct of operations principles.
- Independently perform advanced waste handling operations.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment with a high degree of proficiency.
- Utilize skill saws, Sawzall tools, and other hand tools during glovebox downsizing activities.
- Aid in resolving operational issues.
- Provide guidance to less experienced personnel while ensuring work is performed safely in accordance with approved procedures, conduct of operations principles, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support the Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) as a member of the Glovebox Downsizing Team.
Requirements
- Minimum Job Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience handling and/or transporting hazardous waste.
- Knowledge of Type A and Type B shipping containers, waste processing, safety basis, and conduct of operations principles.
- Ability to understand inspection and characterization data on waste containers.
- Experience following operating procedures, shift orders, and facility standing orders.
- Ability to assist in preparing waste handling reports.
- Experience working in radiological areas or ability to qualify as a Radiological Worker.
- Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
- Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician 4:
- Highly proficient as a Forklift Operator.
- Highly proficient utilizing skill saws, Sawzall, and other various hand tools.
- Experience utilizing LANMAS/WCATS.
- Experience wearing an Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) or Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Qualifications
- Education/Experience at Lower Level: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Education/Experience at Higher Level: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in a nuclear facility.
- HAZWOPER certification.
- RCRA certification.
- Forklift certification.
- Crane operator certification.
- HMPT certification.
- Experience utilizing LANMAS/WCATS.
- Experience wearing an Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) or Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
