Electrical Technician (Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3/4)

About the Role

Join a team supporting mission-critical manufacturing operations in a high-consequence environment. In this role, you will provide hands-on electrical technical support across specialized equipment and systems used in national security applications. This is an opportunity to apply and grow your technical expertise while working with advanced instrumentation in a highly regulated setting.

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Responsibilities

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3

• Performs electrical repair and maintenance on a wide variety of manufacturing equipment (e.g., electro-mechanical systems, analytical instrumentation, gloveboxes, furnaces, radiographic equipment, and high vacuum and pressure systems).
• Provides technical support for fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and analytical instrumentation activities.
• Coordinates with internal customers to complete tasks and ensure availability of assay instruments.
• Maintains and tracks documentation to support compliance requirements.
• Works under general supervision and follows established procedures and processes.
• Builds depth of knowledge in a primary technical area; may support multiple functional areas with guidance.
• May work in environments involving chemicals and radioactive materials and support national security-related work requiring protection of sensitive information.

Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 4

• Performs complex electrical repair, maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting across diverse manufacturing systems and specialized equipment.
• Provides advanced technical support and guidance in fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and analytical instrumentation.
• Independently coordinates with internal customers and serves as a primary point of contact for resolving technical issues.
• Ensures the availability, reliability, and performance of assay instruments; identifies and implements improvements as needed.
• Leads tasks, projects, or process improvements and mentors or provides guidance to less-experienced staff.
• Ensures documentation meets compliance and audit requirements and contributes to improving documentation processes.
• Works independently with minimal supervision in high-consequence environments, including those involving chemicals and radioactive materials.
• Demonstrates deep expertise in one or more technical areas and is recognized as a subject matter expert.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements (Level 3)

• Demonstrated experience in electrical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of industrial, manufacturing, or laboratory equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.
• Working knowledge of electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout and NFPA 70E.
• Experience using diagnostic and test equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes).
• Ability to work in a team environment and follow established procedures with limited supervision.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 4

• Advanced troubleshooting experience with complex electrical and integrated systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions on non-routine technical issues.
• Experience leading tasks, serving as a technical point of contact, or mentoring other technicians.
• Ability to identify, recommend, and implement process or equipment improvements.

Education/Experience

• Level 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
• Level 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A: Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in electrical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance, including work with high voltage systems, AC/DC circuits, capacitors, and RF equipment.
• Experience performing technical work in manufacturing, laboratory, or production environments, such as assembly, materials characterization, testing, or mechanical systems support.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical documentation, and effectively use digital test equipment.
• Knowledge of electrical safety standards and regulations (e.g., NFPA 70E), including lockout/tagout procedures and safe work practices.
• Experience working in hazardous or highly regulated environments, including those involving chemicals, radiological, or fissile materials.
• Familiarity with quality and compliance requirements, including ensuring work, materials, and finished products meet established specifications.
• Experience maintaining required training and adhering to site-specific safety, security, and operational procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, exercising sound judgment on non-routine tasks and contributing effectively in a team environment.
• Experience serving as a technical resource, point of contact, or subject matter expert (SME) for manufacturing, material handling, or waste-related activities.

Additional Desired Qualifications for Level 4

• Advanced experience troubleshooting complex systems and investigating alternative solutions to resolve issues affecting manufacturing, material handling, or waste operations.
• Demonstrated ability to recommend and implement solutions to improve processes, equipment performance, or operational efficiency.
• Advanced knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NFPA 70E) and their application in complex environments.
• Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts, processes, and requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience providing technical leadership, guidance, or mentorship to other technicians.

Essential Job Functions

• Ability to speak, reading vision, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, twisting the trunk or back, bending, kneeling, balancing.
• Applying torque with hands or arms, use of both hands, use of both arms, carrying 10-20 pounds, lifting 30+ pounds.

Work Environment

• Working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule.
• Work near sources of ionizing radiation, working near machinery and moving parts.
• Domestic/foreign travel, mask or respirator, safety glasses and eye protection, gloves or hand protection, hearing protection, safety shoes or protective footgear.

Schedule

This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Pay

• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3: $66,100 - $103,600
• Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 4: $72,800 - $115,400

Additional Details

This position requires a Q clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires U.S. Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.

This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, 712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-employment drug test required. The Laboratory maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.
