About the role
This position is open for external candidates only. The Research Technician will support Pilot Scale High Explosive (HE) Synthesis and Formulation Manufacturing campaigns in the High Explosives Science and Technology Group (Q‑5) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Q‑5 group provides the knowledge base in HE testing for the Nuclear Weapons Program and other national security areas, specializing in energetic materials science including synthesis and formulation, pilot plant production, advanced manufacturing, analytical chemistry, thermal and mechanical characterization, detonation performance testing, and special security projects. The role will be filled at either the Research Technician 4 or Research Technician 5 level, with additional responsibilities assigned at the higher level. Work is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. The position requires a one‑year commitment for regular appointment employees to be eligible to apply for other Laboratory jobs.
Responsibilities
- Provide operational support for high explosive manufacturing operations, including Pilot Plant synthesis, large scale mixing, and formulations.
- Perform maintenance and preparatory support: maintain equipment, ensure waste compliance, procure chemical precursors and consumables.
- Prior experience with mass transfer pumps, valves, process control systems, and high pressure/vacuum systems is desirable.
- Ability to lift and move 50‑lbs, obtain respirator and forklift certification.
- Prioritize production of high‑quality data and material while adhering to all safety practices.
- Assist with production schedule planning and collaborate with scientists/engineers to develop process improvements.
- Troubleshoot equipment, refine chemical processes, and improve process safety and efficiency.
