About the Role

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week, 2-10 hour shifts, Monday through Friday) under the supervision of the APP director, collaborating physician, and Sr. Administrative Manager. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will support the Division of Breast Surgery in the MGB Cancer Institute, providing comprehensive healthcare for women with breast disorders, including follow-up of patients with breast cancer and benign disease.

The NP will coordinate and assist in the assessment and management of patients, including pre- and post-operative evaluations, minor procedures (e.g., incision and drain management, cyst aspirations), triaging urgent appointments, coordinating tests and consultations, implementing treatment plans, and performing patient education. The role promotes collaboration between patients and the surgical oncology teams, including clinicians, medical assistants, and support staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care, counseling, and education to patients in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and procedural settings.
  • Perform complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans based on diagnostic findings.
  • Provide high-quality and timely documentation, including admission notes, progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Perform bedside procedures appropriate to the patient population.
  • Order medications and write prescriptions in accordance with organizational and regulatory policies.
  • Coordinate tests, consultations, and urgent appointments.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and staff.
  • Participate in projects, programs, and activities supporting clinical practice and operations.
  • Maintain licensure and complete continuing education requirements.

Ideal Candidate

  • 3-5 years of experience in an Advanced Practice role, preferably in breast oncology, general surgery, or plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  • Highly motivated and collaborative, with demonstrated skills in delivering direct patient care at the advanced practice level.
  • Broad clinical understanding of outpatient care, including diagnosing and treating health problems, obtaining patient histories, performing physical examinations, and prescribing medications.
  • Ability to identify and solve routine and complex clinical care matters.
  • Maturity, self-confidence, and ability to manage patients across disciplines, specifically plastic surgery and surgical oncology.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, prioritization, and flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including medical and scientific terminology.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulatory requirements (e.g., JCAHO, HIPAA).

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nursing as an APRN (DNP or NP) or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies (required).
  • Current Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant licensure in Massachusetts.
  • Current Massachusetts Controlled Substance Certificate and DEA license.
  • Qualified in basic and advanced cardiac life support standards (American Heart Association).
  • 0-1 year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (preferred).

Additional Details

This is an onsite position located at 15 Parkman Street, with scheduled weekly hours of 20.

Pay

Annual pay range: $126,838.40 - $173,867.20 (Grade 7). Compensation is based on skills, experience, education, certifications, and other relevant factors.
