About The Job

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota invites applications for an instructor position beginning Fall 2026. The position is teaching-focused, including classroom and lab instruction. This is a 12-month, annually renewable position, beginning 2026 through 2029, with the possibility for extension.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach courses, applying modern pedagogies and inclusive teaching strategies for a diverse student population
  • Cook up course content through collaboration with department colleagues and the Center for Educational Innovation
  • Coordinate laboratory manuals
  • Coordinate teaching assistant efforts
  • Sit on the BME Curriculum Committee to review and provide feedback on new course proposals, program-wide curriculum updates, etc.
  • Support students through letters of recommendations and career guidance

Specific Duties Include

  • Assisting with preparation and team-taught delivery of course content in the interactive learning classroom
  • Assisting in preparing and teaching laboratory sessions
  • Grading
  • Holding weekly office hours
  • Cooking administrative efforts across multi-section courses
  • Assisting in ordering laboratory supplies
  • Supervising undergraduate teaching assistants
  • Facilitating department-wide data collection efforts that coincide with course delivery duties
  • Performing analysis and review of course and program curricula
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. required in Biomedical Engineering or related field (must be completed prior to Fall 2026 start date in late August)
  • Ability to teach 5-6 of our courses (average 3 credits each) per academic year
  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience working with diverse individuals and groups
  • Experience related to the department's needs in support of our teaching and research missions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to undergraduate biomedical engineering education and to developing innovative, high-quality curricular materials and instructional initiatives
  • Familiarity and sufficient background to teach topics that will cover ~85% of our department curriculum
  • Experience teaching large lecture courses
  • Experience reviewing curriculum and the course and program levels
  • Experience with online teaching software (e.g., Canvas, Proctorio, Gradescope)
  • Experience with hybrid teaching modes and technology
  • Experience supervising Teaching Assistants
