About the Role

The Coach is responsible for designing and implementing athletic program activities, analyzing opposition strategies, and ensuring compliance with applicable rules and regulations. This role involves supervising student athletes, using sound instructional techniques, and serving as a positive role model. Coaches may also act as liaisons between the school, community, and various organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Assess student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and determine team placement.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information related to the role.
  • Conduct supporting activities such as parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets to inform and recognize participants.
  • Develop game strategies and plans to prepare the team and individual athletes for competition.
  • Create team and individual practice regimes focusing on strength, speed, agility, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for potential hazards and recommend modifications to reduce injury risks.
  • Guide and mentor other coaching personnel on instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision.
  • Identify program needs and recommend expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Implement practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation.
  • Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain records such as game statistics, insurance forms, permission slips, emergency information, schedules, and equipment inventories.
  • Manage the overall high school athletic program to ensure continuity across all levels (freshman, junior varsity, and varsity).
  • Monitor student athletes’ academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide intervention as needed.
  • Oversee assistant coaches, student managers, and volunteers to provide direction and monitor activities.
  • Perform personnel-related functions such as interviewing, assessing, and recommending staff.
  • Promote the athletic program through off-season clinics, skill camps, and community engagement to increase participation.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives.
  • Supervise student athletes during competitions, travel, meetings, and practices to minimize injury risks.
  • Support other athletic program staff to assist in their roles and functions.
  • Analyze opposition strategies before and during athletic events to develop effective game plans.

Requirements

  • Skills required to perform multiple, technical tasks, including adapting to changing work priorities, administering first aid, applying laws and regulations, and organizing information.
  • Knowledge of algebra/geometry, technical information interpretation, pertinent laws and regulations, equipment usage, injury prevention, public relations, and safety practices.
  • Ability to schedule activities, gather and classify data, work flexibly with diverse groups, and solve problems independently.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions, exhibit leadership, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and enforce sportsmanlike behavior.
  • Capability to motivate student athletes, provide consistent discipline, and travel to off-campus events, including evenings and weekends.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Significant fine finger dexterity required.
  • Job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.
  • Performed under temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
