About the role

Supervises and coordinates activities of train crew engaged in switching railroad cars within rail yards, industrial plants, or similar locations. Facilitates loading and unloading of cars, making and breaking trains, and switching cars for customers in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and coordinates train crews.
• Communicates switching orders to train crews focusing on safety and efficiency.
• Utilizes various systems and reports to organize and communicate customer changes to cars.
• Ensures daily train lists are executed accurately and timely by train crews.
• Investigates and provides accurate reports for any incidents or accidents.
• Understands factors contributing to costs and overall profitability of the location.
• Understands locomotive requirements based on horsepower and trailing tons and controls efficiency of fuel costs.
• Knowledgeable of FRA regulations for the railroad industry.
• Comprehends written safety rules, procedures, safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and other work-related information.
• Comprehends and communicates instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
• Adapts to a constantly changing environment and utilizes common sense and problem-solving skills.
• Trains switch crews and other personnel on job-related duties, including federal and company regulations, rules, and safety guidelines.
• Passes training and required testing.
• Performs other duties as requested or required.

Requirements

• Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
• Must pass and/or obtain all reporting, testing, and certifications required for this position.
• Must hold and continue to hold a current locomotive engineer’s and conductor’s certification.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
